The shipping container lifestyle

The book contains 17 chapters giving you everything you need to know about Shipping Container Homes. Before I stumbled upon this enlightening book, I was only vaguely aware of the possibility of living in a shipping container, though the very prospect seemed bizarre. However, as the first chapter informs us, this new fad is taking the world “by storm”. By storm? Yes, I’m as surprised as you are. So I had to read on find out why, how and where this phenomenon is taking off. Apparently, it derives from several movements, viz. minimalism and the ‘Tiny House Movement’, which is explained in Chapter 4. The idea seems to be that people want to live in minimalistic houses of less than 300 square feet. The book also goes in to the practical details of what you would need to buy a shipping container, and how much one would cost. The prices are given in both UK pounds, US dollars and Australian dollars. The lack of Canadian dollars makes me assume the author might be Australian. Chapter 9 contains a number of ‘cool design ideas’, which is nice. Some of the examples shown in Chapter 15 look positively cosy, so it does seem like a worthwhile idea. Lastly, in Ch. 17, there is an FAQs section, which admirably explains many common questions and concerns. I certainly would recommend this book to anyone who is remotely considering the idea.

Disappointing

I bought this book wanting to go to the "source" for the CEH exam, and hoping that it would be the most up to date given its recent publication. I am 60 pages in so far, but have a number of gripes already. First, the book reads more like text book than an actual guide to ethical hacking. It is filled with general platitudes, and structured as an information dump.

Second, the list of tools given in the chapters do not specify which platforms they run on, and appear to be weighted heavily towards Windows users. Why not just give us the good old cmd and terminal commands (tracert for cmd, traceroute for Linux), and expand on those where/if needed? And how in the world can you write a book on hacking without once referencing Kali Linux in the index?

And last, there is a major, major error on page 32. I don't know where they got this map of the RIR coverage, but it is totally false (see [...]), and conflicts with the bullet point list below.

Continuing to read it for the basics (I want to know how these guys think), but it is already apparent that I will need to supplement this heavily with other sources.

Mildly disappointed.

I just received this book and am immediately disappointed. This is a brand new book from EC-Council. I somewhat expected to have access to the online tools study tools referenced in the text, but it seems those materials require an activation key. I presume those are acquired by signing up for classes or something to that effect. If I was into classes I would not be buying books off Amazon. I've never gone to a certification class and then passed an exam. People should try to understand how the human brain works and stop promoting this non-sense. Get a book. Study what is in it. Lab it. Study some more. Put it to use. Skip the class. I digress. It is unfortunate that some of the tools provided within the text are not accessible. I normally don't go to the vendor book releases because they are overpriced for what they deliver. My only exception to that statement is the Cisco Press books but they are not in the hacker space and have nothing to offer. At any rate, at the time of this purchase this was the only book available and I purchased it against my better judgement. Hopefully other publishers have some books out soon. I'm rambling. Later. :)

Decent Simple Intro For Ops Managers But Pricey for Pamphlet

Dave Teumim's Industrial Network Security, published by ISA, is a very basic, very short book that does a good job of introducing cyber security to an ICS manager with zero security experience.

This "book" really is more of a pamphlet. It's 130 pages long with huge spacing and the fewest number of words on the page since a Dr. Seuss book. At $69 it is hugely overpriced, which led to the 3-star rating. At $9.95 for a book and $4.95 for a Kindle version, and correctly positioned as a very basic introduction, it would have warranted 4-stars.

To the publishers credit, a blurb on the back cover is a quite accurate summary:

This easy-to-read book introduces managers, engineers, technicians, and operators on how to keep our industrial networks secure amid rising threats from hackers, disgruntled employees, and even cyberterrorists.

The book is well organized, well written and a light, easy read. People with any security experience will not learn much and find the book wanting. They are better off with Eric Knapp's much more substantial, albeit also more flawed, book with the same title, Industrial Network Security ... and Eric's book cost 50% less.

Engineers will find this book too basic and will be much better off with Ralph Langner's new book which is more detailed and speaks their language.

An Excellent Introduction to Industrial Networks and Systems Security

This book offers an introduction to all the aspects that need to be considered by any Automation, Instrumentation, and/or Control professional to guarantee appropriate security measures for any Industrial network for which he/she may be accountable for.

When the book mentions Industrial Network it refers to both the communication components and the computer-controlled equipment used in industrial applications. Additionally by Network Security, the author refers to the rapidly expanding field concerned in how to keep industrial networks secure, and by implications, how to keep the people, processes, and equipment that depend on them secure.

These architectures must be secured, but done so without a complete redesign or cost prohibitive measures. This book assists industry members in understanding the problem, scope, and technical components of network security in industrial environments. It is an excellent resource for technical staff to offer up to managers to explain a complicated topic in non-technical, approachable terms. This book also covers peripheral topics such as training and awareness. Each topic is covered quickly and easily, without being bogged down in details that non-technical staff would find uninteresting. Also, as an ISA publication, it is a trusted source. A good educational resource for the corporate environment.

She shows how these women, local actors caught in a web of global economic relations, try to take advantage of the foreign men who are in Sos�a to take advantage of them. Through her detailed study of the lives and working conditions of the women in Sos�a’s sex trade, Brennan raises important questions about women’s power, control, and opportunities in a globalized economy.

About the Author
Simon Wadsworth was for 16 years Chief Financial Officer of a publicly traded Real Estate Investment Trust. During his tenure there, the company's capitalization grew from $200 million to $3.5 billion. Since his retirement at the end of 2009 he continues as a Director and invests in his own portfolio of REIT Preferreds. He is a graduate of Cambridge University in England, and has an MBA from Harvard Business School. Simon champions REIT Preferred investments as both a personal testimony and as a proponent of retiree prosperity. Beginning in January 2009 he made a series of personal investments in REIT Preferreds, mostly in the latter half of 2009 and in 2010. Calculated on an internal rate of return basis, the investments returned 78% in 2009 and 33% in 2010, for an overall annualized Internal Rate of Return of 50%, far in excess of the averages for REIT Preferreds over the same time period. While these spectacular investment returns cannot be repeated, it is reasonable to expect that more modest returns in the high single digits can be achieved.

Best Book on Preferred Stock

I ordered Simon Wadsworth book in mid August along with 3 other Preferreds book, AFTER I saw some significant paper loss in my portfolio consisting of well over 50% in Preferreds. In mid June 2013, nearly all Preferreds lost value with the 10 Year Treasury Note "taper fear" following the announcement of Chairman Ben Bernanke of tapering on his Quantitative Easing (QE II). At this time, there has been very nice recovery in the Preferreds market. This book could easily save me thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of self study. While I still subscribe to a paid service AND have studied 2 other comprehensive books on Preferreds. Cash is King, written on REITS Preferreds, conveys many extremely relevant important points to remember if you invest any Preferred stock, including Preferreds outside of the REITS sub sector.

He has also addressed the dilemma of the probable increase in the 10 Year Treasury note and good guideline on whether you should CAUTIOUSLY add more position, when appropriate as well as to slow down in investing in the REITS preferreds when the spread between the 10 Year T note to the Preferreds yield should narrow. This book is easy to read and not a thick book like the other 2 books I started back in January 2012. It is the MOST OBJECTIVE, concise and practical book ever published on this niche market. In this yield hungry investment world, Preferreds are still good source of income BUT there are risks which can be minimized by STUDYING (read and re Read) his book. I wish Simon would write a new edition so that we can learn how to cope with this challenging market, which is not exactly kind to income investing. After all, Wall Street and brokers LOVE to let you believe that the stock market is always the best place to be for long term performance. After all, it is YOUR MONEY and their commission. They always win.

PS: Despite of some paper loss which I had from the STEEP drastic drawdown in May - June 2013, my portfolio value actually increased because of the earlier purchases AND all the purchases continue to pay decent dividends, which I can never get from the highest dividend paying common stock.

Unique primer for little known investment sector

You might imagine that the *only* book devoted to a well hidden, tiny corner of the stock market -- the Preferred stock of Real Estate Investment Trusts (or as they are commonly called: REIT Preferreds) -- would be boring and difficult to understand. Not at all! This is a short, fun book, easily digestible, that gives you pretty much everything you need to know to invest in these little critters.

The book addresses the following questions:

1) What are REITs and REIT Preferreds?

It discusses the types of REITs, their characteristics, their history, and a brief look at how to value them. It then describes where REIT Preferreds fit into REIT financing, and the characteristics of Preferreds.

2) Why are REIT Preferreds good investments?

You'll find a good discussion here of why the credit rating agencies under-rate REIT Preferreds, why these stocks are not followed, and why it's difficult for anyone but retail investors to invest in them. The author gives his judgement as to where your best opportunities lie, as well as some of the tax considerations.

3) What are the risks and safeguards to think about when investing in these securities?

The chapters devoted to risk -- interest rate risk, credit risk, takeover risk -- were the most helpful for me. I found the discussion of each risk and the safeguards to employ to guard against these risks was at just the right level. It was easy enough so that a beginner could understand, but yet contained enough content to keep the more seasoned investor interested.

4) What type of investor is this aimed at?

This book is aimed at active individual investors or investment advisors, not institutional investors or REIT veterans. It asks you to think about your investment goals, your situation in life, and your outlook towards investing as a prelude to absorbing REIT Preferreds into your investment strategy.

5) How do you develop an investment strategy for REIT Preferreds?

The author gives you specific steps for developing a REIT Preferred strategy. He gives some specific examples to help you, including a more in-depth discussion of three specific REIT Preferred stocks, and his own portfolio of REIT Preferreds as it looked at the end of 2010.

I have been investing in REIT Preferreds for about a year now, and I found this book to be very helpful. I imagine it would be a huge help to someone just getting started with REIT Preferreds.
