for sensor networks and MANETs

This book's subject overlaps with the cases of a MANET [Mobile Ad Hoc Network] and a sensor network, where the latter might typically be composed of static nodes. The embedded systems of the book often have no graphical user interface like those of personal computers or cellphones.

The nodes comprising an embedded system have to talk to each other wirelessly; there seems to be no practical case where the nodes are wired to each other. So the book delves into issues like how might the nodes authenticate each other. This is a hard problem given that the obvious PKI approach consumes a lot of clock cycles and hence precious power. Often the nodes are severely power constrained. But a symmetric encryption entails that nodes know a common key. How is this distributed? Perhaps before deployment, when the network owner has physical possession of all the nodes. But after deployment, if a node is then taken over by an adversary, she might be able to get the common key and hence break the encryption.

For efficiency in communications, one chapter suggests a cross layer approach to developing new protocols. A very promising idea, as suggested from early simulations.
