The House of Yes, by Susan Jay

The House of Yes is the erotic memoir of a modern day mistress. A victim of rape at the age of four, Susan grows up to believe that only mistresses have the upper hand in the sexual game. Set against the summer of 2006, each chapter describes a different man in her life sexually, and otherwise. Susan's experiences cause her to recant her female chauvinism and grow to value her lovers both sexually, and as the modern day victims of sexist attack from women. Review
The House of Yes will draw you into Susan's world with ferocity and eroticism. Susan unfolds her truth with the endearing innocence of a child whose memories and desires remain unsullied. --Veronica Monet author of Sex Secrets of the Escorts

About the Author
Susan Jay divides her time between stay-at-home mother of four and mistress. Married for nine years, she avoids taking married men as lovers. Her twenty-five years experience with men spanning ages from fourteen to eighty have reinforced her belief that society's messages regarding what qualifies a man as eligible for sex have become narrow and sexist. Currently she works to promote compassion between men and women.

A read that once picked up, will be very difficult to put down
By Midwest Book Review
Some women lead repressed lives, but others use their sexuality to its fullest power. "The House of Yes" is a memoir from Susan Jay, a pseudonym of a housewife who abandoned the tradition of a housewife for something far more enticing. Styling herself a mistress, she uses her sexuality to find her pleasure and much more with many men. Enticing, erotic, and sensual, she hides nothing, making "The House of Yes" a read that once picked up, will be very difficult to put down.

Erotic Work Arousing, But on What Grounds?
By L. C. Henderson
What distinguishes erotica from pornography? According to [...] the latter has few socially redeeming characteristics and is aimed at appealing to those who have an unhealthy obsession with sexual matters. In contrast, erotica is stimulating and arousing material that focuses more on foreplay, intimacy, and the sexual satisfaction of both parties.

Jay manages to elude The House of Yes being labeled as pornographic by going to some lengths to explain the reason for her obsession with sex. However, her attempt to justify her sexual proclivity through sharing with the reader that she is a rape survivor who has also experienced the violent side of sex might not gel well with a female audience, who could, themselves, have been subjected to physical assault of this nature.

Jay's text swings from her self-description as one verging on nymphomania to where she tries to elicit support from her readers by explaining why her focus is on the more physical and sensual nature of her encounters with men. Overall, she comes across as someone who is in conflict with herself and someone who is prepared to manipulate others for her own benefit. Although The House of Yes is described by Veronica Monet, author of Sex Secrets of Escorts as blending a "world of despair and redemption with the ferocity of a Biblical tale married to the eroticism of a romance novel", the references to Jay's dalliance with matters scriptural contained in the book are somewhat ironical when one considers that she glories in being a mistress.

That there is a great deal of salaciousness in The House of Yes is inescapable, and that she intentionally appeals to a male audience, rather than to a female one, is made clear in the Introduction to her book. However, she does bear a female readership in mind as well. Jay, in fact, strives for balance in the work--whether she always achieves it, though, is another matter.

Jay writes well, and her characters have some depth, which counts very much in her favor. However, one should be mindful that the audience at which Jay aims is primarily an adult one. The House of Yes is interesting in that, even though it could offend readers who are conservative in their approach to physical intimacy, Jay has put some effort into trying to justify the stance that she takes in this book. In brief, it is a work of thought-provoking erotica--it is up to you whether you wish to be more prudent than prurient about it. [Reviewer for [...]]
