Also, I believe that with the industry-wide adoption of Agile’s development process, the need for test automation engineers to understand and be able to create API level test has become critical.

This book is what I wished I had when I first began using UFT API testing. I’m adopting a “hands-on” approach, and have tried to include practical examples and pithy explanations for all the concepts presented. This is not meant to be an exhaustive look at every aspect of UFT API but rather to serve as a quick-start workbook. Hopefully, this book will save you some time (and headaches) by painlessly getting you up to speed on UFT API testing.

I’ve been using HP Service Test since its initial 11.0 release. There was little documentation and next to zero information on the web to help me get started. You need to read this book if you're new to API testing with UFT

(Disclosure: I'm a Functional Architect at HP, and was responsible for the design of HP Service Test and API Testing in UFT)

This is Joe Colantonio's first book, and as far as I know, it's also the first book that has been written on API Testing with UFT. It's a great accompaniment to anyone who's getting started with API testing. The book starts out by describing the new user interface, and then guides you through the process of creating your first test. It then goes on to explain how to use UFT to test different API technologies, such as Web Services, REST, databases, FTP, JMS, etc, and describes how you can download and install free implementations of these technologies so that you can experiment with UFT for yourself. The book also includes useful information such as integration with HP Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), as well as how you can get Jenkins to run your API tests as part of your continuous integration. As a bonus, there's even a script that you can use to schedule recurring tests from ALM. The book closes with a chapter on integration with other HP automated testing tools such as GUI tests in UFT.

Yes, there are a few niggling typos, but nevertheless, I'd recommend this book to anyone starting out with API testing. You'll probably agree with Joe's words in the introduction, "This book is what I wished I had when I first began using UFT API testing."

Excellent way to ramp up on UFT

Those familiar with Joe's website (joecolantonio.com) already know his love of automation and his desire to help others avoid pitfalls. HP's Unified Functional Testing (UFT) combines the functionality of the Quick Test Professional (QTP) and HP Service Test 11. The UFT API Testing Manifesto focuses on the non-QTP functionality within UFT, functionality that has been enhanced from Service Test 11.

The book is clearly written and full of practical, focused examples. After reading it, I have sent this book to a number of teams within our company who are starting to use UFT. It is aimed for the beginner in API testing, but there is enough depth to make this a worthwhile read for experienced Automation Engineers. It provides basic context for the importance of headless testing, then tours the new IDE (significantly different from QTP). The detailed examples (testing JSON, SOAP, RESTful services) alone justify reading.

Joe's first book - You dont want to miss this one!

Finally I had the time to read a technical book in its entirety, if you have read Joe's blog I am sure you would know how I did it.
The book illustrates very forcefully the advantages of a "hands-on" approach like what most automation engineers would prefer over theoretical knowledge (which is basically what you can anyway find in the user guide of any tool). I found especially interesting the way the screenshots were captured and then explained using notations; this made it easier to visualize without the tool right in front of you.

I would recommend everyone who knows QTP/Selenium or wants to explore UFT to read the book, the reasons:
1. The book will reduce the learning curve of interpretation: you would first learn the basic fundamentals that are most necessary, and then move on to more complex stuff like Custom Code/XML/DB/FTP testing.
2. Once you are done reading the book you would appreciate what the tool has to offer from a non GUI perspective.
3. Finally the book is underpriced for what it offers!

The position was defended primarily by United States Army soldiers of the 2nd Platoon, Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. The Taliban surrounded the remote base and its observation post, attacking it from Quam and surrounding farmland. They destroyed much of the U.S. heavy munitions, broke through American lines, and entered the main base before being repelled by artillery and aircraft. The United States claimed to have killed at least 21 Taliban fighters for the loss of nine U.S. soldiers killed and 27 wounded, and four Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers wounded. The U.S. deaths were the most in a single battle since the start of U.S. operations in 2001. The Battle of Wanat has been described as the United States's "Black Hawk Down" of the War in Afghanistan, as one of the bloodiest Taliban attacks of the war and one of several attacks on remote outposts. In contrast to previous roadside bombings and haphazard attacks and ambushes, this attack was well-coordinated with fighters from many insurgent groups with an effort that was disciplined and sustained which was able to precisely target key equipment such as a wire-guided missile launcher. In 2008, NATO forces in southeastern Afghanistan deployed sub-company-sized patrols to the Pakistan border to disrupt supplies flowing to the Taliban from the Federally Administered Tribal Regions of Pakistan. They established small patrol bases, which came under regular attack by Taliban forces. Rock Move OPLAN 8–9 July 2008. The result of the move was the establishment of a Coalition outpost at Wanat Proposal for COP at Wanat In June, a small contingent of 48 American and 24 Afghan troops, 72 in total, were operating in and around Wanat, a mountain Quam that was the center of the Waygal District government and about five miles from the coalition military base Camp Blessing. On July 4, a U.S. Army helicopter attacked and killed 17 civilians, including all of the doctors and nurses at a local clinic, infuriating local Afghans. FOB Bella was under attack, indirect fire, intel reports said that the FOB was going to be overrun from within the base as well. The helicopter attack was in response to the indirect fire received from a mortar tube that was being fired from the bed of a Toyota Hilux pick-up. The initial Taliban radio transmissions that were intercepted, reported that the "Big Gun had been hit" (mortar tube) and the commander had been killed. A few hours after the helicopter attacked, with commands and confirmation from Chosen Company commander and the troops in contact confirmed the targets.

Lifesaver

This book is the sole reason I am able to comprehend the dense grammar course I am currently taking with my extremely knowledgable professor. The master's grammar course is intended to instruct university ESL instructors, some English speakers who have never taken a grammar course since grade school. The course is jam-packed with information at a fast pace. This workbook has been a lifesaver because it courages lecture material application.

This makes sense of the textbook if you do the exercises. However, I just wish in general the authors had a better sense of organization. The chapters presented in both books seem random. However, there is good information mixed in for those willing to dig.

A broad but interesting overview

This book is an overview. There is no way you can go into depth on the material needed in 300 pages. This is no popular science book either. You need to be familiar with astronomy, physics (mechanics in particular), advanced math through calculus and differential equations, and even some chemistry to get the most from this book. It does try to balance some pretty good explanations with some examples, and there are exercises at the end of each chapter. Don't expect to be an expert at the end of the book. In fact, I'd say believing that you've been bombarded with enough material that you feel somewhat lost would be a good sign. The point of the book is to give you a feel for the kinds of calculations and sciences that are involved in rocket design so that you can decide if studying these topics in depth is for you. The book does show the author's love of the subject as he discusses motivations and even the kind of "dreamer" that the budding rocket scientist should be. You shouldn't be the type that looks at every problem and sees only limitations. Recommended for the upper level undergraduate physicist or engineer.

Direct and simple, the way it should be

I have recently bought this book in order to learn some basics about rockets, expecting a far more simple text. After reading the whole book, I cannot say I have missed part of my pretty precious spare's time. This is, indeed, one of the most concise and pretty accurate applied's science book I have ever read, and I have read a few now. Don't be afraid of the book's thickness, as someone else stated before, it treats tons of differents fields involved in rocket's design and operation. You should be used to basics physics, and general engineering knowledge to get the point the book tries to reach.

Simple in concept and expected to be more a student's text book than a hard science's book, if you have technical knowledge and have little idea about rockets, this book covers almost everything to design one.

There are, of course, tons of other issues not covered in this book, like pump's cavitation, special equipment for cryo requirements, and so on, but, again, I should state that the latest isn't possible without the previous.

I have enjoyed a lot this book, and I am just a "freak" who enjoys technology in general, including hard science books. Considering that, I highly recommend that book, and it is worth the money it cost.

Remember one thing, and it is the book's title. As it states, it is an introduction, so expect basics on topic. This way, book fully satisfied the title, and surpasses it by far.

The topic was well presented. The author does a great job of making rocket science easy to understand. The chapters were organized in a logical and easy to follow manner. This book is excellent for someone who just wants to get an understanding of rocket science while at the same time providing equations and calculations for university classroom study. Well done!

There are many nousishing lessons and values we can learn and apply to our lives to better ourselves.

An insightful, witty, and well-written analysis of the effects of mass-media on women in late 20th-century American culture. Douglas cuts through the fluff that spews from the tube with a finely-honed sense of the absurd that can forever change (or minimally, inform) how you perceive the changing portrayals of women by the media. The only book I know of that has been given highest recommendations by Gloria Steinem, The McLaughlin Group, and Amazon.com.

In this insightful study of how the American media has portrayed women over the past 50 years, Douglas ( Inventing American Broadcasting: 1899-1922 ) considers the paradox of a generation of women raised to see themselves as bimbos becoming the very group that found its voice in feminism. Modern American women, she suggests, have been fed so many conflicting images of their desires, aspirations and relationships with men, families and one another that they are veritable cultural schizophrenics, uncertain of what they want and what society expects of them. A single image--Diana Ross of the Supremes, for example, or Gidget from the popular sitcom--can send mixed signals, Douglas shows, at once affirming a woman's right to a voice and cautioning her not to go too far. Thus the media is often both a liberating and an oppressive force. Douglas is particularly attentive to the ways pop culture's messages have responded to shifting social and economic imperatives, including the feminist movement itself. While she asserts that pop culture can have a profound impact on one's self-perceptions, she also stresses that women, by the example of their own lives, have changed--mostly for the better--the way the media represents them. In the current reconsideration of the popular culture of the baby boomers, the cultural contribution of men is emphasized. The neglect of the cultural history of women from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s worries critic Douglas. In an engaging personal tour through the landscape of television, popular music, new media, and advertising, she retrieves that history while exploring the mixed messages the media delivered to women. She claims that popular girl singing groups like the Shirelles offered new possibilities for female assertiveness, while the television show Bewitched portrayed a woman using magic to escape dull domestic chores. Emphasizing complexity, she relates the ambivalent treatment of women in popular culture to the evolution of the women's liberation movement. Douglas, a professor of media studies at Hampshire College and author of Inventing American Broadcasting: 1899-1922 (LJ 11/1/87), translates intricate academic ideas into witty and accessible prose. This entertaining book fills a gap in cultural history and belongs in public and academic libraries.

Who says scholarly writing can't be fun?

Reading this book is like spending a long weekend with a new friend about your own age, wallowing in music and decades-old sitcom reruns while you trade memories that begin "Did you ever see . . . ?" and "Remember the one about. . . ?" You laugh yourselves silly, but also come away with a new appreciation for how TV, movies, and music helped you define who you were and how you saw the world.
OK, I'll be honest. _Where The Girls Are_ is also a first-rate introduction by example to the field of media studies, a brilliant defense of feminism, a scathingly funny critique of American broadcast journalism and an insightful exploration of the complex ways that girls and women relate to the steady stream of female images they're fed by the mass media. But if I led with that paragraph, the book wouldn't sound like it was any fun at all. And it *is* fun. Oh, my, is it fun.
Susan Douglas starts from the idea that, although her experiences and those of her friends (white, middle-class, suburban, straight, Baby-Boom-era women) aren't universal, they *can* be used to illustrate larger truths about how people relate to the mass media. She proceeds, for 300 pages, to do just that. Her analyses are always sharp (you will *never* look at "Charlie's Angels" the same way again), and her prose is as far from academic-ese as you can get: funny, pointed, and (when the subject warrants it) wrath-of-God angry at some of the manifest injustices she describes.
Read this book. Even if you're not part of the Baby Boom generation. Even if you're not a woman. Trust me.

Like eating ice cream from the container...

This book chronicles the images of females in baby-boom popculture and how they reflected and shaped politics.
Because women have been historically consigned to the private sphere of home and hearth, the idea that our tv and mass media images can alter society is a riveting idea. Douglas then backs up this thesis with an admirable amount of intensive research and personal recollection that travels from Gracie Allen to Northern Exposure.
Although the book was primarily intended for babyboom women's culture, I am old enough to remember the rise of the superwoman as personified in Wonder Woman and Charlie's Angels and how this new genere was designed for both male tittilation and female admiration. Meanwhile, myself and other first graders loved the show because people who looked like us (hopefully when we were older) were the center stars of the show.
While I am now eagerly awaiting a revised and expanded edition with chapters on Buffy, Xena and Charmed, the book still provides an excellent example of the un-ending struggle between feminist and anti-feminist influences in the American mass media. No self-respecting feminist of any age ought to be without this awesome and well-researched tome.

witty pop culture tour

"Where the Girls Are" is a tour through and a look at how pop culture affected girls and women. It is a thought provoking, sarcastic, and very witty portrayal from a woman who admits to having an "attitude problem." The targets are taken from literature, movies, TV and music, and include everything and everyone from "Bewitched," The Shirelles, "Sex and the Single Girl," Charlie's Angels, Murphy Brown and Madonna. She also examines famous feminists'impact including Kate Millett, Gloria Steinem and Bella Abzug. The book contains plenty of quotes from anti-feminists, as well, to show (at least in this reviewer's eyes) just how ridiculous if often effective the opposition to the Women's Movement was.

One thing. The author laments that role models in children's literature are "few and far between." Either she is making a blanket statement, or she has no experience. Young adult and children's lit, even back in 1994 when the book was published, are a treasure trove of strong, positive female heroines.
