Death at Sea is the story of Graf Maximilian von Spee, commander of the German squadron in China at the outbreak of World War One. His was a powerful flotilla, but not powerful enough to remain in Asia, where the ships of Britain, France, Russia, and Japan could destroy him. By sailing into the heart of the British Empire surrounding the Indian Ocean he could disrupt commerce and troop movements and perhaps spark rebellion in India. But if he sailed east across the Pacific and into the Atlantic, all the way around the world to Germany to reinforce the home fleet, together they represented a significant threat to the British navy. It all depended on what he decided to do. To a significant extent the outcome of World War One also depended on what he decided to do. Death at Sea is the novelistic history of what happened to Graf Spee's squadron and the ships that Britain deployed in an anxiety-charged effort to eliminate the menacing German threat. Opposing naval tactics and gunnery skills combined with the "fog of war," questionable leadership, and fatalistic personalities on both sides to determine the outcome. The author is professor of history at Drexel University in Philadelphia. His previous seven books include A History of the Great War (Oxford University Press, 2009), A History of Europe in the Twentieth Century (Oxford University Press, 2004), and The Kaiser's Army (Oxford University Press, 2001).

Death at Sea - A great, insightful read

Eric Brose writes a truly objective narrative about the plight of the German East Asiatic Squadron lead by Vice Admiral Maximilian Graf von Spee. Eric's "novelistic" approach, while keeping factual with many citations from letters and memoirs from the combatants, makes this a compelling story.

In his afterword, Eric Brose suggests that the outcome of World War I might have been very different, had the German squadron successfully ambushed the British at anchor in the Falklands, and successfully rejoined the home fleet in German waters.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this well researched book.

Disappointing Pseudo-History

This book promises to share the story of a very interesting series of naval engagements during WWI. It delivers something...different. The book is billed as "novelistic history", so rather than scholarly nonfiction, the reader is presented with a text that includes long passages of first person narration by the characters (some of which are fictional hybrids of real people, the author is nice enough to mention this at the END), complete with conversations and internal monologues. However, it is seldom clear which character is narrating in a given a passage; this gives the book the feel of a fractured post-modern novel rather than a book of history.

Much of the dialogue takes place between people who died during the events and as a result are largely conjectural (again the author mentions this at the end). In fact, it appears a large amount of the book is little but conjecture! Because so many of the principal actors died, the author took the liberty of presenting the reader with the dead men's thoughts and ideas as HE assumes them they were. Instead of quoting direct sources he merely supposes. The character of Captain Muller must be extraordinarily prescient as according to his "letter home" in 1917 he predicts the rise of fascist nationalism, the second world war, the arrival of "super weapons" (clearly nuclear weapons) and fears of these weapons falling into the hands of terrorists. The author's approach would probably be excellent for introducing young readers to a subject, but it is very disappointing to the adult reader.

In addition, the writing and proofreading are of low quality. there are numerous uses of the wrong words. I can forgive some malapropisms but this is entirely too much: "Sturdee had just showered and was just shaving with a towel around his waste." (p248). There are far too many more like that in the text. The author also frequently would use the same words over and over in close proximity, I recall a passage towards the middle where the word "successful" is used three times in two lines.

Avoid this book, it is not worth your time.

a first class job telling the almost fatedness of two fleets one british one german. as if acting out the predermined plan of a savage sea god we see this greek tragedy unfold.We see bumbling heroism fatalism bouyant enthusiasm and the death of an era,,,,,,well done

Katerina Martina Teaiwa is Head of the Department of Gender, Media and Cultural Studies and Pacific Studies Convener in the College of Asia and the Pacific at the Australian National University. Born and raised in the Fiji Islands, she is of Banaban, I-Kiribati, and African American heritage.

Interesting and frustrating in turn

I bought this book because of my family's history on Banaba dating back to before the war. My father, Bryan Connell was posted to the island before the war and was one of the last to leave before it was occupied by the Japanese. He returned immediately after the cessation of hostilities along with my mother and sister. He was actively engaged in three separate 'recruits' in the forties and early fifties. He donated a stained glass window to the Catholic Church, which is presumably still intact. I was born in Melbourne and went to Banaba at the age of two months and my brother was born there on Banaba. I have read several texts relating to the phosphate industry, including 'The Phosphateers' which is used as a reference by the author, which my father had. I have also read Grimble's 'A pattern of Islands' and 'Return to the Islands', both of which my father, (who knew Grimble) claimed were basically romantic rubbish, thinly based on fact. My family stayed on Banaba until 1959 at which time we all moved to Nauru, the other island which also features in this book. I last visited Banaba in 1968, when it was still in full swing as a phosphate -producing island.

I found the book to be interesting in parts, hard work in others due to the excessive use of vocabulary usually confined to academic papers, the excessive use towards the end of passages in Gilbertese, and somewhat lacking credibility in the part about white employees of the British Phosphate Commission (BPC) and their life in the fifties and sixties. For example, I remember quite well the day we had the phone installed in the mid fifties. My father as assistant accountant was one of those who was 'chosen' as one of the first to get a line. To have read that someone arrived on the island in the thirties and that the European houses had telephones is just not correct. We lived next door to the Wills family in Tabwewa and my sister is friends with the eldest of the THREE not four sisters to this day. Noel Frye was NOT an engineer but was manager of the trade store. Harry Wills was a big man but Bert Pascal was the island accountant of the day, not Harry. 'Mac' MacRobert was one of the personalities of the two islands in my time. It is suggested in the book he was gay. This is unsubstantiated and serves only to give a little chuckle to the stories of Mary Zaysmer, who, based on the fact she got everything wrong about the Wills family, has no credibility in my eyes. This section of the book is weakly researched and a cursory glance at Facebook would have allowed dozens of people to be contacted through one of the Island sites.
I have no doubt that the author did plenty of research at an academic level and the book no doubt serves as an interesting and passionate account of how the Banabans lost so much physically, emotionally and culturally. To this day the tussle continues. It may be of interest to the author that the decision to relocate the Banabans was seen by many or even most of the individual BPC staffers who were on the island after the war as highly beneficial to them. My father used to say that Rabi was a far better island than Banaba and their future was secure in a place where natural resources like water and fertile soil were abundant. It reflects the paternal, even patronizing approach we had to the islanders at the time. These days it would never happen but we can't turn back time. Likewise, the use of the term, 'boy' was used as we in Australia would say, 'mate' to someone we don't know. In fact the common use for us was 'noh' (short 'o') which was how they addressed themselves if they didn't know each other's names. And the wash 'janes' were wash 'tianes', which, unless I am mistaken is a word meaning 'girl' or 'woman'. I am prepared to be wrong there but it has been a long time.
This book is not for everybody and if you are a former Phosphateer or the descendant of one , you will find it unfulfilling. If you want some historical insight into the Colonial approach to the displacement of an indigenous people for 'the greater good', you might find it inside.

Follow the phosphate.

This author provides a history of the Island of Banaba, its people, their culture and the phosphate. Skillfully written Teaiwa manages to blend history, social theory and cultural study with the political economics of phosphate. Unfortunately this book does not discuss the ecology of the region or phosphate mining's affects on the environment or health. However it is excellent in most other respects.

A very lovely book

I am new to Milanese Lace. When I saw this book available on Kindle I decided to purchase it. I'm not sure if this format was a wise decision. I think the size of the patterns will be off whereas
in book format the patterns would be the appropriate size.
I do love the book. It is beautiful, with such lovely photos of Milanese. I hope someday to gain the skills to make a few of them. This book is an inspiration to anyone who creates this beautiful lace. Patricia Read is an incredible artist.

Historically interesting, but repetitive and a bit too promotional

The Start-up Nation was recommended to me by a friend who said it was an insightful book. It wasn't a disappointing book, but neither did it leave me very impressed. The book attempts to answer one single question: "Why is the amount of start-ups in Israel relatively so high". It does a decent job in explaining that and summarizing Israels history, but it doesn't leave you with much concrete advise.

The book consists of four parts, but unlike most books, the parts aren't actual clear groupings as the authors just flows from story to story and the authors repeat the same points many times. The stories were nice and the book was well written. It would be hard to distill the answer to the start-up nation questions as many things related. However, from the beginning on, there is a very strong emphasis on the army. The emphasis on the effect of mandatory army service was actually something I disliked about the book. A good example of this was the story of the army having an elite group which receives an thorough scientific training (Talpoit). This elite group created an exceptional amount of entrepreneurs. Only the 1-2% top students will be allowed to join this group. One thing that I kept wondering is if it is the 1-2% of the stop students who are exceptional entrepreneurs or people from this army unit? It felt the conclusion was drawn too quickly.

Other strong influences that caused the start-up nation are the Jewish culture and especially its lack of hierarchy and it's emphasis on challenging and discussion. Also the people in Israel have a shared mission to build a country and that strong relationship with the country creates some passion for helping the country which also aligns people. The book considers the huge amount of immigration to be another advantage as it created a wide diversity and people who immigrated are natural entrepreneurs.

The book covers quite a lot of history (especially military) of Israel, which I did find interesting but I wasn't always sure how relevant it was. It also made interesting sidetracks my comparing Israel with Dubai and Singapore and shows how the country is different and how that causes different different levels of initiative.

All in all, I felt the book was interesting yet not very special. I would recommend it for people who are interested in Israel, but not for people who want to know about start-ups. It gives very little concrete advise about start-ups or how to create a start-up environment. 3 stars.

A comprenhensive and illustrative book

Israel, has always fascinated me. I went there on a holiday trip last year (2011) and started to see many developments and solutions they have created in different fields: solar energy, irrigation, IT development, agriculture and so on. So when I came across this book, I knew I had to have it in order to understand, how a young country (60 years) have surpassed older countries that posses vast natural resources and that there are not in a constant fight for survivor.

This book is very easy to read. The authors portraits Israel from its beginnings and what they have done to be where they are right now with examples and without getting into much technical and economical terms.

They have a long road ahead, but what they understand and its intrinsic in his culture is to keep innovation and coming up with solutions. Failure is not seen as something bad, but instead a learning experience that is encouraged.

Excellent book. Applies both to the businesses and to the individual...

Very anti-semitic and nonsensical

I personally found it very racist against God's chosen people. An anti-semitic slur was found hidden in the text, like a puzzle. There was also an antiseptic caricature pictured in the book.

I did find it humorous how he proposed energy independence through the waste to energy incineration of circumsized foreskins.

Something I didn't understand is how America could replicate the subsidy it gives to Israel. The books says that the U.S. can write a check to itself but that doesn't make sense to me.

In the words of the Prophet Fore Chan: Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact. Treat this review that way/

I wanted to return the book but my waifu already threw away the box it came in and I didn't want to spend money on a new box just to send it back. I now use it to prop up a broken table leg. It's doing its job but I would have rather save my time and money by not buying this.

Check It Out Before Buying

This is a beautiful cookbook, no doubt. It's also a delight to thumb through for Southern feel-good vibes. I mean, who else but Southern Living could get away with 8 cornbread recipes, more than 8 pimiento cheese recipes, multiple fried catfish recipes, myriad grits recipes, and listing equipment requirements that include a Mason jar and cast iron skillet?!

My biggest complaint with this book is that so many of the baking recipes include mixes in their ingredient list. If I want a cookbook version of cinnamon streusel muffins, I don't want one of the three ingredients listed to be....cinnamon streusel muffin mix. I didn't see a single biscuit recipe that didn't use self-rising flour and most cornbread recipes use a cornmeal mix. My Ultimate Southern Living cookbook which I love has at least a baking powder biscuit recipe that is not dependent on self-rising flour.

That being said, there are hundreds of truly mouth-watering recipes in this book. I think it might depend on what your other cookbook options are as to whether this book is a "must have." Peruse it in a bookstore or check it out from a library; then buy it here because Amazon's price is the best!

Away down South in Dixie

Southern Living has gathered together recipes for the true modern southern cook. They seem to be a combination between modern simple cooking and the old time from scratch; for example in the cake section 10 recipes use mixes and 26 use from `scratch'.
There are many forms of cornbread and cheese sauces and po'boys; so if you really want to investigate some different forms of southern cooking you would enjoy this book

There are descriptions of what southern cooks must have; such as a cast iron skillet and how to season it, mason jars and recipes to use with them and thoughts on cornbread. Techniques are shown for various methods such as; making biscuits and crepes. Pages of discussions by the editors of Southern Living are inserted on how to fry anything or making iced tea and then there are some pages with descriptions of southern chefs and their restaurants. There are a few picture sections of the recipes, but most do not have a picture. There are a handful of suggestions for menus for dinners or parties.
One of the best inclusions is Faidley's recipe for crab cakes, one of the top winners in most crab cake tastings.
The 1001 recipes included are: appetizers and beverages, breads, breakfast and brunch, cakes, cookies and candies, desserts, fish and shellfish, grilling and barbeque, meats, pasta, grains and rice, pies and pastries, poultry, salads, sandwiches sauces, condiments, side dishes, soups and stews.

This would be a great cookbook for collectors and those who admire the recipes in Southern Living and just those who would like to experiment with some traditional southern dishes, including many variations - after all, any area of the south just knows they have the best recipe.
Try them they are not that hard and will add variety for those who do not `cook southern'.

11 Ways to Cook Catfish, 100's of Not-From-Scratch recipes

What I liked;
1. I counted at least 11 catfish recipes. Can't get more Southern than that.
2. Includes the secret to good Gumbo.
3. A whole page devoted to making the perfect mint julep.
4. Six pages committed to the making of grits.

What I disliked (really disliked):

A number of recipes included pre-packaged mixes. Let me give you some examples:

The recipe for Easy Three-Seed Pan Rolls calls for frozen bread rolls, egg whites, and seeds.

The recipe for Chocolate Angel Food Cakes calls for angel food cake mix, cocoa, and sugar.

I do not consider these to be recipes, anymore than adding Nestle Quick to milk and sticking it in the microwave is the recipe for Great Hot Cocoa.

If you want a fabulous Southern Living Cookbook I would strongly suggest purchasing The All New Ultimate Southern Living Cookbook: Over 1,250 of Our Best Recipes (Southern Living (Hardcover Oxmoor)).

Useful as a study outline & great pictures

History of the United States, Volume II by Elisha Benjamin Andrews covers the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, the Critical Period, the United States Constitution, Federalism, Jeffersonian Democracy, the Barbary Pirates War, and the War of 1812.

His coverage of the American Revolution emphasizes the heroic aspect of the revolt with honorifics that even the descendants of these men might find too effusive. George Washington was described as `the most perfect human personality the world has known' in Chapter VIII, a chapter with more tributes than Kraft has cheese. Owen Wister may have read these volumes of history, because one of the characters in The Virginian is a descendant of John Stark, and the famous phrase attributed in this volume to Colonel Stark is interwoven into the text of Wister's novel.

The coverage of the American Revolution is devoid of many of the buzzwords associated with the events of the period. Andrews never used the word mercantilism, or the Lechmere case, or virtual representation, or the Townsend Acts, or the Olive Branch Petition, when describing policy or incidents of the Revolutionary period. He did not mention the philosophical sources of the Declaration of Independence created by Jefferson. Even the heroine Molly Pitcher at Monmouth was not mentioned despite the author's intention to incorporate the efforts of women into the success of the Revolution.

The defeat of St. Clair's forces in 1791, here attributed to Thayandanegea, was credited to the Miami chief Little Turtle by Gordon Wood in his book `The Empire of Liberty.' Wood stated that some of the dead American soldiers had their mouths filled with soil by the Indians to mock their greed for land in that battle. The point is that the reader has to be careful in accepting some of the facts stated in this volume. If these little mistakes bother you, don't read the volumes.

Having just read A Brilliant Solution by Carol Berkin, a book about the invention of the American Constitution, I can remark in detail about the coverage of the Constitutional Convention by Andrews. Nicholas Gilman, born in 1755, was the junior member of the New Hampshire delegation at 32 years of age, but there were several delegates younger than Gilman at the Convention. Jonathan Dayton, born in 1760, appears to be the youngest at 27 years old. Gilman, by the way, is spelled with one l.

The misspelling is joined by another half-dozen errors in the text. One kind of error that occurs more than once in the text is that a sentence is ended with a comma, rather than a period. The errors are more annoying than burdensome to the reader. One way to look at the errors is to reckon that Project Gutenberg has made these volumes available to the reader at no cost from their web site. For all we know, these errors could have been in the original text.

We have the luxury of the internet, and much additional scholarship on the various topics of US history discussed by Andrews in his volumes. Occasionally, the reader may disagree with shades of various topics addressed by Andrews. A century-old summary of history cannot compare with in-depth volumes of recent scholars. Yet Andrews did offer a nice review of the material concisely, and more often than not, with clarity.

There is even a chapter on Social Culture at the Turn of the Century. Histories written today have a greater focus on the social aspects of history, which is one reason why many books written years ago are insufficient for today's students.

Most e-books on the internet use the source from Project Gutenberg, so you may find the same kinds of typos wherever you found your document. There are three tables in Volume 2 that are poorly formatted in the medium of an e-book. See the Dey's bill on page 129 and the population tables on page 79 for examples of tables that are formatted improperly. Many books converted to the e-book medium have these kinds of errors with tables.

Another bell and whistle that would be nice is hyperlinks from the table of contents to the document, and back. E-books allow such features - and hyperlinks are nice to have for books that are used as references. For an example of hyperlinks in an e-book, download Volume 6 of this series on Project Gutenberg.

The e-book with pictures contains over eighty drawings, illustrations and maps to accompany the history. Reading the book with pictures is especially recommended, because you'll get to see the mugs of many historical figures that you may have only read about, but never seen an image. It is fun to read these books once or twice, but beyond that, the formatting errors and typos becoming more glaring and tend to detract from the body of work.

Wonderful anthology

I am a grad student and this book has been very helpful to me in my research on the American Revolution. I down loaded the book to my Kindle. The book was offered free, but I would have gladly purchased it.

Great Read

This is one of the opportunities that you grab by the horn and ride hard. Knowing about your history is recommended, this book presents that opportunity for anyone to learn about the short history of this great nation. This nation statistically is the youngest amongst all the developed nations, however the history of the people is very significant. This book gives you the idea and the understanding of the people of the United States. We are all part of the melting pot. Great read!
