A good intro to anatomy and physiology

This book is designed to be an introduction to A & P and it does that very well. I didn't give the book a perfect 5 star rating for a couple of reasons. First, I have a background in anatomy and found some of their explanations of a few body systems to be confusing even though I already knew the information. This was particularly true of their explanation of the Autonomic Nervous System. In general, most things are explained well and have a lot of really helpful accompanying figures and tables.
The only other thing that I don't particularly like is the way the pathology is integrated. I feel like it was a little to heavy on the disease end of things. This is really sort of a personal preference, I am not really a pathologist so I didn't feel the need to have that information. It just depends on your focus of study.
The thing I really like about the book is the review section at the end. First, there is an extremely helpful outline summary, which is really handy if you didn't understand something in the chapter. Second, there is a chapter test that can help you review and test what you learned.
The only shortcoming of the review section at the end is that it doesn't have all the key terms (in bold type throughout the chapter) listed. In my studying, I generally went back through the chapter page by page after reading it and wrote down each key term and its definition instead of using the list in the review section. Also, all the key terms that are in bold print are not in the glossary, which I think they should be if they are going to go out of their way to make them bold.
All in all, a good introduction. Definitely pick up the student study guide that is designed to go with this text, as it will definitely help you study.

Best of the 3 in my course

I had to buy three A&P textbooks for a class I'm taking. This one is by far the best. Easy to understand, chock full of great artwork, and a nice balance between normal functioning (the biggest focus by far) versus common diseases for each system of the body (usually to highlight why normal functioning is so important). My CD was broken, so I can only use the online study tools, and they are helpful. Nice job!

A good summer read.

First, let me explain myself a little so that you may know where I am coming from. I am a pre-med biology major who will be a senior for the fall '06 term. I have never had any A&P class whatsoever because the biology department's requirements...well, that is another story. I bought this book because it is not too detailed to lose sight of the big picture but just detailed enough to explain pretty much all the A&P that will be on the MCAT. Of course, this book has tons of stuff that is NOT tested on the MCAT, but I have the examkracker books and I use this book for the (very) few times examkrackers does a poor job explaining things. It's also always good to read the same thing from various sources because the information is much easier to retain that way. I like the pathology that is intermixed throughout the entire book, and the outline pages at the end of each chapter are nice as well as the "case studies" that you are presented with. All in all, this book would be 5 stars for its high yield, one semester A&P (and some pathology) content, but I had to take off one star for the abysmal section on nutrition and metabolism. Glycolysis, CAC, and ETC are barely mentioned. The one or two figures are childish (the others are really good). I may be biased though because I just got out of biochemistry and metabolism was beaten into my brain. Still, I can recommend this to those who want a cheap, basic A&P book to supplement their MCAT Biology studying. The pathology stuff is just bonus and fun to read as sort of a segway into my senior year and my pathology class.

Plenty of valuable information at a great price!

While it is true that Mark Cuban's eBook "How to Win at the Sport of Business" is simply a compilation of his blog posts (which are all available online for free), this book has something that his blog doesn't. Editing. I've read a number of his blog posts over the years and a few things are clear to me: 1) Mark is a smart, successful guy. 2) He has a lot of good ideas and information in his head and he's willing to share what he knows with anyone willing to take the time to read what he writes. 3) He's not a great writer. (His blog is filled with typos and weird punctuation issues.)

Thankfully, this book has been edited. The punctuation errors so common on his blog have been fixed, and most typos corrected (though there are still a few, and in some of the storytelling parts he changes from present tense to past tense). The blog posts have also been arranged in a logical way so that this book reads very comfortably as a complete book. That said, my biggest complaint about this book is also the editing. There is one blog post that appears twice (with different titles though). I don't know how someone misses something like that.

Small quirks aside, this book is a good, fast read filled with lots of valuable information. There is by no means anything earth shattering here, but there is plenty of useful information for anyone running a business or thinking of starting one.

A Collection of Blog Entries at First Glance, But So Much More

Every since I started reading Mark Cuban's weblog, BlogMaverick.com, I've been emailing links of my favorite posts to my employees and business associates. I subscribe to it on my RSS feed and typically read every entry within a matter of hours. So when I saw Mark's entry on Facebook that he had produced an ebook for sale, I bought it without a second thought. I must admit, I read the foreword and was immediately irritated to learn that the ebook was simply a collection of his most popular posts, many of which I'd read 10x over. Oh well, it's $2.99 as I read his first post which he discusses his humble beginnings coming to Dallas as a broke college grad. 5 hours later, I'm finished with the book and I'm convinced that was probably the best $3 I've spent on a book. If you're a blogmaverick reader his old posts have been updated with details and commentary that you will find very interesting and if you're not a blog maverick reader, you will no do doubt find find inspiration and more importantly, practical advice that applies to any business.

What I have always found most impressive about Mark is how little he cares about what people think about and how passionate he is about getting 'IT' right. This book arranges his rags to riches tale in a chronological order that will be of great practical use to any entrepreneur.

One thing I've felt throughout this NBA Lockout and ever more so after reading this ebook is that Mark Cuban must be going absolutely insane sitting in these 'business meetings' over the NBA's labor issues with dinosaurs like Billy Hunter and David Stern. I'll borrow a quote from his post "Twelve Cuban Mantra for Success":

"11. Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered
This is one I got from my partner Todd Wagner. He is right on. Sometimes you have to go for the jugular, but more often than not, the biggest mistake people make is getting too greedy.

Every good deal has a win-win solution. There is nothing I hate more than someone who tries to squeez every last penny out of a deal. Who often raises the aggravation level to the point where it's not worth doing the deal. Which also raises the dislike level to the point where even if a deal gets done, you look for ways to never do business with that person or company again.

Business happens over years and years. Value is measured in the total upside of a business relationship, not by how much you squeezed out in any one deal."

Well as I digress, I'll end this review with saying that rather than emailing links to my employees, friends and business associates, I'm going to buy this ebook for them.

It worked immediately!

I just read the section "Why entrepreneurs shouldn't use a PR firm" last weekend and I was inspired to send out my own email to local media. I used the format provided and sent one out to all of the local TV stations and newspapers on behalf of my company artconnect.ca

This proved to be an excellent plan! Today a rep from the leading morning TV talk show in my city (Edmonton) called me. They want to feature my company on their show on April 13th. This is HUGE exposure.

Professional golfers and athletic teams, including the most winning professional soccer teams use biofeedback to help them improve their game and perform at more consistent higher, optimal levels of performance. The US military uses biofeedback to both optimize performance and ameliorate the effects of PTSD.

Gentle P&P Variation, Darcy's Beautiful Letters Make Me Sigh

There are many avenues one can take to love, but I confess that one that I enjoy is when a romance involves correspondence. The pen can sometimes say more clearly what the lips cannot. I eagerly picked up this Pride & Prejudice variation as a result. What if Mr. Darcy put all his thoughts on Elizabeth into secret letters that he never planned to mail? And what would happen if she somehow received them?
Oh yes, I certainly wanted to find out.

The story opens two months after Hunsford, but then flashes back to get the reader au currant with the present situation. There is an assumption that readers will already be familiar with the original Pride & Prejudice story, but I think someone new to it might be okay if they have the patience to let the backstory tease out after some initial bewilderment.

The story begins with Darcy contemplating his lost chance at love with Elizabeth. At first, he is angry at the woman who scorned him and terribly heartbroken. He just wants to be away from her. Unfortunately, due to a chain of circumstances, he is brought repeatedly into her presence. He has no hope that this is a second chance, but does hope that he can at least show her that she was very wrong about him before they part for good. Later, he is determined to change and be a man worthy of her even if he never gets another opportunity with Elizabeth. In the meantime, he bares his soul in letters to Elizabeth that he even directs to her and seals up, but then he hides them away.

Elizabeth thought she detested the man who arrogantly proposed to her, but it is not long before his letter defending himself against her charges to his character work upon her. She misjudged the man, utterly. Further encounters between them unsettle her, because seen through less prejudiced eyes, Darcy is a worthy man and she feels the sorrow of the way she rejected him and destroyed any chances of remaining the object of his love. Or is there still a chance?

Darcy and Elizabeth share the narration of this story. I loved how the author took the opportunity to stay within the timeline of the original P&P story, but also fill in the gaps of what happened in Darcy's life away from Elizabeth. Oh, not that there aren't a few distinct changes that come about as a result of Darcy or Lizzy's actions. The ones involving Wickham and Lydia were great as was the extended time with Georgiana and Col. Fitzwilliam.

It is a gentle story that is slower-paced slowly building the romance and growing the characters. Darcy and Lizzy were hard on each other at first and then hard on themselves. There's a lot of introspection in this one which suited the style of the story.

The author did a wonderful job of settling the story in the time period and in the world of Jane Austen. There wasn't a strong attention to details other than in specific instances, but it added depth rather than distracted from the story.

I should probably say that since I mentioned the letters earlier; that the actual contents aren't available until nearer the end of the story. They are beautiful letters and worth it. I got terribly swoony over them.

All in all, this was a splendid variation on the original that I would recommend to Austenesque Lovers in particular and, in general, to lovers of Sweet Romance.

TYPE OF AUSTENESQUE NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice Variation

TIME FRAME: The day after Darcy’s first proposal through several months later

MAIN CHARACTERS: Darcy, Elizabeth, Colonel Fitzwilliam, Mr. Bingley, Jane Bennet, Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner, Georgiana Darcy, Mr. Wickham

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Darcy has a secret habit of writing Elizabeth Bennet soul-revealing and heart-purging unsent letters. His letters help him sort out his feelings, expel his longing, and cope with his despair and Darcy began writing them the night of the Meryton Assembly. What will happen if Darcy’s secret is found out? How do these letters change the course of Darcy and Elizabeth’s lives?

WHAT I LOVED:

- Thrown Together Again: Within the first hour of departing Rosings the Darcy carriage encounters some trouble and Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam must return to Rosings. I love this twist in the story! Darcy has come to the conclusion that Elizabeth was correct about his selfish propensities and ungentlemanly proposal and is very anxious about encountering her again. I loved seeing the development of Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship over these extra and unexpected days – the changing perceptions, the new understandings, and the forging of a tenuous amicability. I could feel Darcy’s agony and torment through these passages and I greatly admired Elizabeth’s open-mindness and consideration.

- Eloquence, Thy Name is Darcy: Watch out, Wentworth! You aren’t the only Austen hero that can write a swoon-worthy and heart-wrenching letter! I think it is lovely that Darcy writes letters to Elizabeth, especially after just meeting her! It is adorable how he uses these letters to find the words he wants to say – to explain his actions and vent his frustrations. I love that many of the letters are included in the text (later on in the story) and I thought Darcy, while tongue-tied and foot-in-mouth in person could express himself beautifully on page…

- Elizabeth, Brave and Bold: When the truth becomes clear to Elizabeth and certain revelations are made, Lizzy is determined she should do and say what she must to appease her own conscience. This includes saying something to Mr. Wickham! I greatly enjoyed Lizzy’s actions! She doesn’t act out of character and stays within the bounds of propriety, but at the same time she finds a way to say what she needs to and effect change. I admire you, Elizabeth Bennet!

- “Lizzy is Quite Fond of Mazes”: There are two delightfully beautiful maze scenes in this book. *sigh* What a romantic place to encounter Mr. Darcy! I would say more, but I don’t want to spoil anything! I will admit though, Lizzy isn’t the only one with a fondness for mazes!

WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:

- Some Small Quibbles: I mostly loved all aspects of this book, but there were a couple things holding me back from giving it five stars. Such as wanting to see more scenes of Darcy and Elizabeth together, they spend a lot of time apart and their scenes together at the end left me wanting more! In addition, I noticed that Darcy was introduced to the Gardiners twice and didn’t remember their first meeting earlier in the book.

CONCLUSION:

Beautifully written words and heart-felt emotions are woven together skillfully in this new Pride and Prejudice variation from KaraLynne Mackrory! I found Yours Forevermore, Darcy to be deeply satisfying with its introspective tone, pleasing development, and happy outcome for all characters involved. Ms. Mackrory has a talent for including charming details and engaging motifs in all her tender romances and I greatly admired all the subtle little touches that made this work interesting, unique, and memorable.

Darcy's secret letters.

YOURS FOREVERMORE, DARCY by KARALYNNE MACKRORY

A word of warning, you will need a box of tissues to hand at certain points whilst reading this book and it's also not for those who don't like a lot of angst.

This story starts just after Darcy's ill-fated proposal at Hunsford. We find out very early on that the letter he gives Elizabeth afterwards is not the first he's written to her. But, the others have never been sent. Darcy has been using the writing process to try to deal with his feelings for Elizabeth from the very morning after the Meryton Assembly.

The story diverges from canon shortly after the proposal, as Darcy and the Colonel are prevented, by various incidents, from leaving Rosings at the usual time. This ensures that he and Elizabeth continue to meet in Kent. He becomes almost a victim to his feelings for her whilst he tries not to impose them on her and we get a lot of his POV during this part of the book.

I won't say how the letters eventually end up in Elizabeth's hands, but you just know they have to, don't you? It's at this point that we get to find out exactly what he wrote to her. This is where I found the need for the paper hankies!

I won't say any more about the plot except for that there is more from canon in this book, watch out for the mazes and evidence of a swim in a lake.

I originally gave this book four stars but on writing this review, I've reconsidered and upgraded it to five. As with all of Ms. Mackrory's books, it's a lovely read, with lots of tender moments but nothing explicit so I can recommend it for all audiences, except the angst-phobic!

Lance and I wrote and illustrated it for fans of The Legend of ZERO who wanted to donate money to help with the repurchase of the rights to Outer Bounds because we felt we needed to create something fun and entertaining in return for their amazing support. Flea, Agent of Chaos is shorter than the standard ZERO novels (about 60,000 words) but contains over 45 different images detailing Flea's crazy misadventures, with a link to the wallpaper-sized images in the back of the book, in case you fall in love with a particular scene. Picking up a Sara King book will lead to a love/hate relationship. She’ll draw you in and leave you wanting more. You’ll spend your time applauding her genius and cursing her name while you beg for the next fix. You’ll end up facebook stalking her and checking amazon to see if the next book has popped up. Heaven help you when it does. You already know you’ll spend the rest of your day lost in her world barely coming up for air and only stopping to sleep when your pass out. I picked up my first Sara King book on a whim back in 2012. After the third one I stopped reading what they were about. I can’t say her books are for every one but for me I’ve yet to read one I didn’t like. Take a chance. You might become her next minion.

Great novella for the Zero Series and if you haven't read the series - get on it and you won't be disappointed!

I loved the book. If you have not read the others in the series, it won't be as enjoyable. The series though is one of the best science fiction around right now. The Zero series is completely unexpected in the genre. You read about humans interacting with alien species and the aliens are always typically coming off as all bad. This book has the characters fully fleshed out so you really are going crazy when there is not another book on the horizon. All science fiction readers understand this feeling completely.
I have to admit, I am usually not crazy about female science fiction writers, but this one blew me away. I will start looking into more female writers after this.
The author's ability to paint a scene with minimal words is what I look for in a good book. I want a book that is running like a television show in my head and this one delivers.
The characters are bad ass too.

This is a really great addition to the "Zero" universe, giving us a glimpse of what the major characters are up to prior to Zero Returns. It stars the Baga Flea and follows the format of a choose your own adventure novel, which is actually tied in with the plot. Flea is a hilarious character with his defiant attitude, comical inability to grasp numbers, and childlike demeanor which makes this a fun read. Can't wait for more.
