About the Author

Christian Constanda, MS, PhD, DSc, is the Charles W. Oliphant Endowed Chair in Mathematical Sciences and director of the Center for Boundary Integral Methods at the University of Tulsa. He is also an emeritus professor at the University of Strathclyde and chairman of the International Consortium on Integral Methods in Science and Engineering. He is the author/editor of more than 28 books and more than 130 journal papers. His research interests include boundary value problems for elastic plates with transverse shear deformation, direct and indirect integral equation methods for elliptic problems and time-dependent problems, and variational methods in elasticity.

A How to that was detailed enough to do it right

I have at 2008 Prius that is starting to act like it needs a new small 12-volt battery. I am glad that I got the book it was very detailed and I know what I was getting into. After reading the book, I decided to let my independent garage do the battery change out since the work was more than I wanted to tackle.
Reading the book saved me a lot of grief and frustration.

Purchased battery and had it installed at independent garage. Battery itself was $50 less than at dealer, and total install saved me $80 all in. Battery has been in use now for 3 months and works fine.

Using the various stages of tapa cloth production to frame a broader discussion of changes and continuities in Maisin culture (economic pursuit, social arrangements, gender relations, religion, politics, and the environment) Barker offers a nuanced understanding of how the Maisin came to reject commercial logging on their traditional lands. Viewed in isolation, the decision appears to be a confirmation of tradition over "modernity." Yet the book shows that it is the most recent, and perhaps dramatic, instance in a long chain of improvisations and compromises that have allowed the Maisin to remain true to core ancestral values while participating in wider social, political, and economic systems. Ancestral Lines provides an important counterpoint to the stereotype of indigenous peoples as passive victims of impersonal global forces.

While accessible to most readers, including those with little or no knowledge of Melanesia or anthropology, Ancestral Lines has been designed with introductory anthropology courses in mind. Each chapter opens with a description of succeeding stages in the creation and use of a piece of tapa cloth. These, in turn, lead into discussions of dimensions of Maisin life that correspond to the sections and order of most standard introductory textbooks.

Barker's book is beautifully organized, clearly written, and each chapter fits snugly within the confines of a basic topic included on all introductory syllabi. Moreover, unlike many ethnographies written specifically for undergraduates, Barker has produced a book that will neither talk down to nor bore students. The Maisin of Papua New Guinea come alive in these pages, and the core question of how they have come to want to preserve their rainforest is one that will capture the imagination of students. It is easy to incorporate into a course's existing structure and it adds the ethnographic detail that most textbooks leave out. A Compelling Place to Visit

I visited the Garden Tomb in December, 2008. The experience was spiritually inspiring and intellectually fascinating. The tomb itself has been in the keeping of a British Trust since its discovery in 1867. The tour guides (all UK volunteers) offer some compelling evidence that this could be Joseph of Arimathea's family tomb (immediately adjacent to Golgatha). But they also balance that evidence with other research that questions that possibility. What is not in question is the authenticity of the tomb in the context of its time. As such, it is fascinating to see because even if it is not the actual tomb of Jesus, it is very much like it. I bought this book at the Garden Tomb Bookshop and read it on the plane home. The book is divided into three parts. The first two parts explore the events surrounding the crucifixion and resurrection, and the history of the Garden Tomb itself. The third section delves into the significance of these events and (for me) is a subject better left to one's own belief and perspective. I didn't finish the third section. But the first two sections are certainly worth reading. The photographs and diagrams give you a feel for the place that codifies what the guides shared. A Pleasant Bit Of Speculation

Having visited the Holy Land in January of 2000 I was immediately drawn in by the cover of this book, with it's picture of the Garden Tomb (a possible alternative site of the tomb of Christ). Walker presents a nice chronology of the events of the weekend that changed the world (the weekend of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ), that is a mix of info from the Bible and informed speculation. I used this book for a Sunday School class during Lent and it was well received. The speculation can be presented as speculation and makes for the beginning of some interesting discussions. I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the crucifixion and resurrection placed in historical context, but especially believe it would be of interest to those who have visited Jerusalem and have seen both the church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Garden tomb.

Good Story, Study & Conclusion

This is a good book. I purchased a copy while in Israel... Part 1 is a good telling of "The Story", Part 2 is "The Setting" = Come see the place where he lay. He is not here; for he has been raised. Matt 28:6. Part 2 talks about both locations and history of both the Holy Sepulchre & Garden Tomb. Part 3 "The Significance", this concludes the book. This book was so good I had to buy another copy when I got home from Amazon so I can keep my 'Israel' copy :)
