About the Author
Emmy-award winning costume designer Janie Bryant creates all of the looks seen on BBC4's Mad Men. She has worked on numerous films and TV shows. In 2005, she won an Emmy for her period costumes on HBO's Deadwood, and this year, she took home the prestigious Outstanding Costume Design award from the Costume Designers Guild.

Love the show, love the stylist!

I've been a fan of Mad Men since episode one. I love seeing the world as it was around the time I was born, when my parents were in their thirties. The tone of the show is largely due to Ms. Bryant's talents.

I've always been a fan of classic & vintage inspired clothes and jewelry & when you add in the wonderful acting & writing on the show, what more could you want!

As a curvy girl, Joan is my hero & watching her has given me more confidence when I dress.

Janie's book is full of good info above & beyond the normal fashion books. My favorite piece of advice in the book is to stand up straight, shoulders back & "be an exclamation point, not a comma". That's the best fashion advice of all time- If I find myself slumping, those words straighten me up & I instantly feel better.

A fun book and a quick read

This is a beautifully designed, well illustrated book with a handful of truly useful fashion tips and advice. I enjoyed the interviews with some of the stars of Mad Men that were included. I recommend this to die-hard Mad Men fans (I'm a HUGE fan, myself), as well as to women who like to wear retro, feminine clothing. But if you are looking for a broader, more in-depth "fashion bible" sort of book, look elsewhere.

Meh but with great illustrations

I love Mad Men, so when I heard about this book, I had to read it. There are many fun tips and insider stories about the show, but there is also a lot more of Janie Bryant bragging. I got a bit weary of hearing about her fabulous collections of shoes and handbags and belts and scarves and dresses and jewels, all high-end and too pricey for most. I know that vintage items are one of a kind and it's hard to write a book about just that. I guess I just expected more behind the scenes stuff or advice on how to dress vintage without looking like I am going to a costume party. It just left me wanting, not leaving me feeling satisfied.

I am giving it 4 stars because of the amazing illustrations. Without those, it would have gotten a 3. A book of just illustrations by Robert Best, now that would be 5 stars for sure.

Peter Christen is Senior Lecturer at the Research School of Computer Science at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. His research interests are data mining, with a focus on data matching, and privacy-preserving data sharing and mining. He has published over 50 papers in these areas, and he is the principle developer of the `Febrl' (Freely Extensible Biomedical Record Linkage) open source data cleaning, deduplication and record linkage system.

An excellent book on an important topic

I am a statistician working in a hospital. Part of my work involves data matching at a very elementary level, but I am no expert! Still, I can see that this is an important topic. The amount of data collected in health care is huge: the challenge is to match data from different sources rather than collect more data. By matching data from different sources we can gain a more complete picture of how people travel through the health care system. You can imagine the difficulties when my name is recorded as "Terence" here, "Terrance" there, "Terry" somewhere else, and, of course, "Terri" (??). Peter Christen is a computer scientist who is an expert in this field. Furthermore, he writes well. So here we have a book that is well-written, by an expert, on an important topic, published by a major publisher, at a reasonable price. Although the book is probably more advanced than I need, suprisingly, I do not regard it as too technical. There is an extensive list of references. With only about 250 pages, I can read it on the train. For a hardback book it is a good price - many university text books cost much more. "Data Matching" by Peter Christen should be in every university library.

Learn how to be a "complete thinker" yourself

There are few people today who know G.K. Chesterton better than Dale Ahlquist. Besides being president of the American Chesterton Society and responsible for much of the renewed interest in Chesterton, Ahlquist has written many books on the twentieth-century maven including Common Sense 101: Lessons from G.K. Chesterton, G. K. Chesterton: Apostle of Common Sense, and In Defense of Sanity: The Best Essays of G.K. Chesterton.

Ahlquist's mastery is even more impressive considering how incredibly prolific Chesterton was. He wrote plays, political commentaries, novels, essays, mysteries, and theological texts. In all he completed over eighty books, hundreds of poems and stories, and more than 4,000 essays.

When you dip your toes into this massive corpus, one thing becomes immediately clear: Chesterton's skill at connecting many disparate ideas. He pulls equally from art, religion, beauty, politics, science, and philosophy. He was convinced that all these subjects are intertwined and that right-thinking about one led to right-thinking about the others. In one of his novels, for instance, he linked Darwinian evolution to political progressivism. In an essay, he tied the scientific theory of relativity to modernity's favorite philosophy, relativism.

Chesterton was convinced that "thinking means connecting things" and in Ahlquist's view, nobody did this better. Therefore if we want to become complete thinkers ourselves, then studying Chesterton is a great way. Ahlquist has produced a new book toward that end titled The Complete Thinker: The Marvelous Mind of G.K. Chesterton (Ignatius press, 264 pages, hardcover).

The book is not "straight" Chesterton; it's not just a collection of excerpts from Chesterton's writings. That's good, however, especially for beginners who are unfamiliar with Chesterton's daunting style. Instead, the book is a guided tour through Chesterton's major ideas with Ahlquist's commentary throughout.

In one chapter titled "The Universe and Other Little Things," Ahlquist shows how Chesterton tackled the paradoxical scale of the cosmos, one that is both shockingly vast and surprisingly cozy:

"Science boasts of the distance of its stars; of the terrific remoteness of the things of which it has to speak. But poetry and religion always insist upon the proximity, the almost menacing closeness of the things with which they are concerned."

Other chapters tie together the problem of evil, war and peace, politics and patriotism, and the limits of language. Chesterton's connections can be confusing at times, but that's where Ahlquist's commentary shines. It helps clarify Chesterton's notoriously pithy paradoxes.

Surprisingly, what I liked most about the book was the Appendix. Titled "Chesterton vs. Darrow," it recounts a forgotten debate between these two iconic, twentieth-century thinkers. Clarence Darrow was the Richard Dawkins of his day, representing progress, science, and the triumph of reason over faith. He's best known as the lawyer who defended John Scopes in the Scopes "Monkey" Trial. Chesterton, of course, stood for religion and common sense, two things Darrow dismissed as superstitious and backward.

The topic of the debate was "Will the World Return to Religion?", and in an interview with Catholic World Report, Ahlquist explained why he chose to include it in the book:

"Well, everyone seems to be familiar with Darrow's shellacking of William Jennings Bryan at the 1925 Scopes "Monkey Trial." But no one knows about the time six years later when Chesterton used Darrow as a mop to clean the floor in a big debate in New York. Chesterton made the great agnostic look rather foolish, and Darrow fans would prefer to forget the incident. So I have reminded them of it."

In the end, after hundreds of Chesterton quotes and excerpts, Ahlquist accomplishes his goal. In The Complete Thinker, he unveils the expansive genius of G.K. Chesterton which touched almost every topic under the sun. If you want to learn how to be a complete thinker, pick up this book and study under a true master.

A superb book!

This thematic study of some of G.K. Chesterton's writings by Dale Ahlquist is a must read. It highlights many of Chesterton's works by exploring a variety of topics as wide ranging as sin, eugenics (birth control) and economics to cite a few. Those seeking some understanding of many of today's societal and political topics would be well served by this book even though many of the Chesterton quotes date from the early early decades of the Twentieth Century. Chesterton's wisdom is that timeless. Chapter 12 which discusses Chesterton's economics and today's global economy, and the Appendix (the Chesterton versus Clarence Darrow debate) are each easily worth the price of the book.

Spoiler alert: The Chesterton/Darrow debate discussion offers some insight into how and why today's media promotes a Progressive agenda -- and has done since the 1920s.

If you are embarking on reading G.K Chesterton you should consider this book along with Dale Ahlquist companion books 'The Apostle of Common Sense" and "Common Sense 101". These are an excellent introduction when beginning what will likely become a lifetime passion of enjoying the writings of G.K. Chesterton. I had read Orthodoxy (Chesterton) and was impressed but puzzled. As I heard in a lecture by Mr. Ahlquist on your first reading you end up underlining the entire work, you read it again and realize you missed something and also that it appears to be even more profound than your first reading and by your third read you enjoy it even more. The works by Mr. Ahlquist put you into the Chesteron 'fast lane' from the start. Read these then start reading Chesteron. You will not regret a moment.

And then I see him. He is looking at me through the crowd, and I feel his stare on me like a ribbon around my neck, holding us together.

He’s as pale and beautiful as all the others here, but there is something special about him. He is only for me.

He is young, with dark hair coiffed perfectly. He is as handsome as any hunk I’ve ever seen in a magazine, and I already find myself wondering what he looks like beneath his suit. I’m certain that his chest is immaculate, and I want to run my fingers down his firm flesh, scratch him and really get under his skin.

I feel his presence, and he drifts over to me from within the crowd. I stare in his eyes, crisp as an amber sunset, burning into me.

Already, I feel myself dampening, tiny pulses making me leak between my legs.

He’s standing in front of me now and I feel a shiver of anticipation run through my body. Before we even speak, he envelopes me with his strong form and kisses me. His lips are cold but his tongue is warm and fleshy as I let it into my mouth, accepting it eagerly. He kisses me deeply, his hands sliding around my waist. He holds me close and I feel my skirt ride up a little, but I don’t mind it. It is as if we are the only two people in the room.

He pulls back from the kiss but continues to hold me against him with his hand at the small of my back. We sway a little as we look into each other’s eyes. It’s like we’re dancing.

“Who are you?” I ask, smitten – but I was before he even touched me.

“My name is Dorian,” he answered, and suddenly I know the reason why I was invited to this party, and what I have come here to do.

I’m going to have sex with him, and I can’t even express how much I already want it.

A needed book: How a Muslim mind engages our 21st century world in intelligent discourse in the blogosphere

Many of us ask the question, " We know something about how we (from the U.S., ...) look at the world; but, how about an educated Muslim from an Arab-speaking country? This book traces the odyssey of an intelligent, curious young man from North Sudan from his religious Islamic upbringing to an informed and progressive voice, representative of hopefully many like the author who have examined and analyzed and felt what the world is, how it became, how its peoples can get along.

Maybe interesting for non-Muslims, but title in misleading

I very rarely do not finish a book, and this was a book I finished about halfway and then simply couldn't bring myself back to finishing it. I thought the book, based on the title, would be about a Muslim's experience with fundamentalism, and then a return to "the Middle Path." Instead I found this book mostly about the author's experiences with online Islam, and his relationship with the online world. If you are Muslim, and familiar with the multiple Muslim websites/groups/communities online, there is nothing new contained in this book. No struggle to reconcile extreme views with life experiences, etc., etc. as one would expect with this book's title.

This inspiring memoir is a MUST read book for a glimpse into the future of Islam and the inner world of the next generation of Muslims. Nasr writes passionately about his search for the heart and soul of Islam in the postmodern context. He addresses the conundrums of the faith for those of us who have had the blessing of a sound secular education, in the new digital age where open source information is increasingly accessible to all. He settles on an integral vision of Islam aligned with an emerging globalized culture, which is still true to the spirit of the Islam of its founder.
