Good continuation of the animated series, but needs to be longer

Batman Beyond: Industrial Revolution is a collection of all 8 issues of the 2011 series in a single volume continuing the adventures of Gotham's new Batman Terry McGinnis. Writer Adam Beechen is clearly a fan of the DC Animated Universe cartoon series from 1999-2002 and knows how to reference, and expand upon various ideas from the television show. It is flawed, and doesn't give enough, but it still provides some much needed Batman Beyond action for fans of the animated series.

The Industrial Revolution plot line is three out of the eight issues comprising this collection, and is by far the best storyline in the series. Derek Powers (Blight) has returned is set to regain control of Wayne-Powers following his presumed death at the end of Batman Beyond. More powerful than ever, Blight is now also beginning to fall apart due to the nerve gas and radiation which created him, requiring an armored suit to keep him in one piece. Fueled solely by revenge directed bot h at Batman and Bruce Wayne Blight's return requires both Batmans to take action in order to prevent the tyrannical Powers from regaining control of the company.

Batman Beyond #8 which is the final story in the series gives a back story to my favorite Beyond villain, Inque. For the most part her origin is unoriginal, and would have been better kept a mystery, but I do enjoy the material regarding the incredibly one-sided relationship between Inque and her daughter. The origin part may be shaky, but the beginning, and end of this issue do exhibit the character's raw strength, and brutal tactics for disposing of her foes, which made her an easy favorite for fans of Beyond.

The greatest problem with this 8 issue series is that it isn't long enough to truly satisfy any longtime fans of Batman Beyond. I'm sure this has more to do with DC not investing enough in the title than with the writers/artists, but it still is a noticeably flawed product which resulted from the creators not having enough room to expand or truly create a long term Beyond storyline. It honestly feels like they wanted everything to be wrapped up in 8 issues out of fear that this may be the last shot they might get with the Beyond universe. If it weren't restricted to being a limited/miniseries of comics I believe the team would have been bolder, and taken their plots to bolder territory.

Adam Beechen and others are currently expanding upon Batman Beyond in a series called "Batman Beyond Unlimited" which features further adventures for Terry, the Justice League, and Superman in keeping with the DC Animated Universe. If this new series is given more than a limited run I do hope for longer, more engaging plots set within the Beyond universe. We the fans have waited a long time and hopefully this time the comic's writing/art team will have enough time to fully flesh out their characters and develop some epic storylines which this franchise deserves.

The artwork is similar to the TV show but be warned this is a jumble of tales than all of them being strung together logically.

Terry McGinnes is the new Batman because Bruce Wayne has become too old and the latter gives tech support from afar (the new Batsuit has all types of improvements and upgrades that would put the standard one to shame).

I liked the showdown with the JLA and the face off with a mystery villain the most. The section about Nightwing was the weakest.

Great Read!!

I have yet to encounter a Batman Beyond story I didn't like and this one is no exception!!

As usual I enjoyed the banter between Bruce and Terry, and the story was extremely good!! Probably the only reason I gave this story 4 stars was the scenes featuring the Justice League. They seemed a bit lame.

There is a really good short story at the end about Inque's origin which I loved!!

Really glad I picked this up!! Batman Beyond continues to surprise me... all in a good way :)

About the Author
HERMAN MELVILLE (1819-1891) was born in New York City. Family hardships forced him to leave school for various occupations, including shipping as a cabin boy to Liverpool in 1839--a voyage that sparked his love for the sea. A shrewd social critic and philosopher in his fiction, he is considered an outstanding writer of the sea and a great stylist who mastered both realistic narrative and a rich, rhythmical prose. He is best known for his novel Moby-Dick and the posthumously published novella Billy Budd.

To Me Personally, Interesting More Than Enjoyable

I am very glad I read this. It is very interesting on many levels. However, I cannot say it was really an artistic pleasure to read.

The story can be read from many standpoints. Was that the author's intention? I wish I knew. I do not know. Obviously, the story is written by Herman Melville. That alone makes it worth the effort in terms of the study of literature.

Bartley is pretty much the only character who is actually named. Certainly Herman Melville is sophisticated enough that I can assume that is intentional. I feel that a sense of isolation is created, by the author, amid an urban environment. Then we find Bartleby had worked in a "dead letter" office. It is my understanding that Mr. Melville himself was becoming a somewhat forgotten author in his own lifetime.

In the course of further study, I found that the story did not find immediate acclaim but has since become iconic. This is true with many works. "The Great Gadsby", which I truly love, comes to mind. But I had to read The Great Gadsby twice, and all of F. Scott Fitgerald's work in between, in order to really come to appreciate The Great Gadsby. I do not feel that way about this story. But I really enjoyed it as a reading experience. Thank You...

He Would Prefer Not To

This story strikes a chord for numerous reasons and can be read on many levels. Modern readers can still relate to Bartleby's sense of hopelessness, but just what is causing his ennui? A myriad of influences converge to make the case for his listlessness. Not to mention the lawyer who is Bartleby's boss and also the narrator of the story plays his part in handling his employees passiveness in a passive way. The symbolism of being walled in cuts to the quick, and the drudgery of work on my well-being does as well. If ever there were a great example of all that the short story form can accomplish, Melville's tale is a shining example.

ONCE, AMAZON ID'd BOOKS AS PAPERBACK, PAMPHLET, HARD BOUND?

This version is a desktop production of 39 photocopied computer printed pages. Quite flimsy. While other editions are actual 'paperbacks' as I identify them; they're all going for less. Some, as 'Like New' are going for $.01 in Amazon Marketplace Or new from Amazon for $4.00.

Moral of m'story: Amazon has all kinds of great books, movies seemingly most everything else. At all prices. These days, frugality's for everyone except the top 4%. Good idea to check buying choices. I just spent $6 more than I could've/should've/would've spent.

As for this fine book itself: Too many Great Writers are ignored because they were first read centuries ago. Melville, Dickens, Mann and many more are out there waiting for us all. Not to mention European authors like Tolstoy, Gogol, Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Pushkin… and more incredible, readable and enjoyable Masters.

I've trolled Asian authors too and found great reads. All, at Amazon of course.So getting worldly in your reading's right for our millennium and
your matter too.

Read for not only what's said but how it's said. Those past masters have styles, diction and - for the Masters - brilliant, edifying and entertaining concepts and insights still fitting for today. SO SIX STARS for Bartleby's story and one star for this flimsy edition. Nice cover art, though.

Fascinating book about Japan's best known dog

The story of Hachiko is known by everyone in Japan. In 1987 a highly fictionalized film about Hachi was released in Japan and then around Europe and was a huge hit. In 2009 an American remake updated to 2009 Rhode Island was released in Europe and went directly to DVD in the U.S.

This is a very thoroughly researched book about Hachi (1923 to 1935), a dog owned by a university professor, H. Ueno. Hachi was adopted by the professor in early 1924 at about 8 weeks old. They bonded immediately and when Hachi was about six months old Ueno began to have Hachi, frequently with his two other dogs, walk him to the commuter train in the morning, and then come to wait for him at the station in the evening to walk him home. In May, 1925, Ueno had a massive stroke after a staff meeting and died at work. Hachi spent the rest of his life living with Ueno's former gardener, wandering the streets by day, sitting at the train station in the evening, and going back to the gardiner's home at night. Many of the legends that have grown up about Hachi over the years are debunked. These include Mrs. Ueno not liking Hachi and gave him away at the death of her husband to be rid of him. She actually moved in with her married daughter, who was a new mother, taking her other two dogs with her. Hachi, at over 90 pounds, was to large, so he eventually was given to the gardener. Mrs. Ueno frequently saw Hachi over the years, to their mutual delight. Also. Hachi had a home awith the gardener. He roamed the streets because the gardener's house was on a very small lot. There were no leash laws in Japan at the time, so Hachi was eventually allowed to wander around at will during the day, but he was fed every morning and every evening by the gardener. Hachi also received veterinary care (sometimes donated). He was not a feral animal with no home, wandering the streets at all hours and hated by his former mistress. He also did not die alone and ignored. Many animals seem to know when they are going to die and go off to be alone. This is probably why the dog's body was found in a fairly secluded place a couple of blocks from the train station.

One problem I found with this book is that the author tends to repeat herself, frequently using the same words and sentences. She also occasionally throws in comments that are somewhat editorial (especially about other people's work on the same subject). One wonders where her editor was.

This is an exhaustively researched book that shows that the story of Hachi, while still very sad, is not as wrenching as is presented in the two film versions. Akitas bond with the immediate family but are aloof with strangers. Hachi bonded with Dr. and Mrs. Ueno, and when he died and she had to give him up, he lost his family and even though he had a good home, it was not the same. It also explains his pleasure at seeing Mrs. Ueno over the years. The real story is no less moving without the movie melodrama. It is a story of a much loved dog who did not understand why his master left him and his mistress gave him up. So he went to the train station every day, hoping his beloved Dr. Ueno would get off the train, if only once more. Anyone interested in Hachi should read this book. Much of the content is a surprise of you only know the story's basics. You will be enthralled.

Mayumi Ito's Study of the Dog, Hachi

While having grown up in Tokyo, going to school in Shibuya, almost every day I walked by Hachiko statue, I was always wanting to know more about Hachiko's real story. Many years passed since, I have had many dogs as my family members, I think I know how devoted and loving dogs are. When I came across this wonderful and detailed study of Hachi I could fully understand the lost feeling of Hachi wanting to meet his beloved master some day, even after his death. Hachi walked to the station in the same way as he did with his master to Shibuya station before his master's death, and waited there hoping to see him in the evening.

This is the real and true story of Hachi that results from Mayumi Ito's painstaking research about Hachi's origin. Not only has she examined the records of the family who adopted Hachi, but she interviewed a number of people who knew about Hachi,in Akita where Hachi was originally from, as well as people at Shibuya Station who took care of Hachi, and also many passers by.

As a research scholar Mayumi Ito has pursued all possible traces of Hachiko. This can be a little burdensome for a lay person to follow at times, but we become convinced that Hachi was an authentic Akita breed from Akita.

Some people use this story as military propaganda of faithfulness to the Emperors, but Hachiko's genuine feeling towards his master was not created just at the time of Japanese Pacific war. Mayumi Ito's work reveals the dog's (especially the Akita breed's), faithful nature towards his master.

As a dog lover, I was fascinated by the careful research and very much moved by her work. I strongly recommend the book, especially if you want to know about Akita Inu.

Thanks to Mayumi Ito, the next time I visit Shibuya I'll look at Hachiko's statue with much greater understanding and appreciation.

Love Hachi

After seeing the movie Hachi A Dogs Tale, I wanted to find out more about this wonderful dog & story. This book sets straight all the mis-information out there & is evident that a lot of research went into getting the correct information. I hope it comes out in paperback (& would love to have other souvenir-type items such as a little Hachi statue to go with it to add to my dog book/movie library as a memorial to him.)
