About the Author
Brett Pelham grew up as the second of six children near the small town of Rossville, Georgia. Brett received his B.S. from Berry College in 1983 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989. He began thinking about this book while teaching statistics at UCLA but got serious about doing so while teaching statistics at UB (in Buffalo, NY). After leaving UB, Brett worked for a year as a visiting professor in marketing at Georgetown University. He was then lucky enough to work for about two years as a senior research analyst at Gallup. This was followed by two not-so-lucky years as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation. At the time of this writing (in January 2012) Brett was extremely excited to have just taken a position promoting graduate and postgraduate education in the Education Directorate at the American Psychological Association. With apologies to Lenny Bruce, you can see that Brett has had some difficulties holding down a regular job recently. The bulk of his research focuses on automatic social judgment and self-evaluation. Over the past two decades, he has taught courses in social psychology, research methods, statistics, social cognition, and the self-concept. In his spare time, he enjoys juggling, sculpting, listening to alternative rock music, cooking, and traveling. His two favorite activities while completing this textbook (in late 2011) were spending time with his 3-year-old daughter Brooklyn and his 8-year-old son Lincoln. Along with his wife LJ Pelham, Brett is co-inventor of the recently released card game PRIME. Along with his son Lincoln, he is co-inventor of the soon-to-be-released card game Cliff-Hanger. Along with his daughter Brooklyn, he is co-inventor of the never-to-be-released card game It’s a Hat. You Like It? His most recent writing project is a novel tentatively entitled Elvis 2.0, which focuses on scientific and religious problems associated with the apparent resurrection of Elvis Presley.

Of all my pool books, this is one of my favorites. The one page lesson format makes it very convenient to read anytime. Tom has a unique way of precisely descibing things that make them easy to comprehend and relate to. Most of these lessons are so insightful they should be read twice. Read once for overall concept, and re-read for complete depth and understanding. This is a wealth of practical knowledge that you cannot find in any other book. If you are a pool player......This book is a Must Read!

The lessons are clear, concise and specific. It is an instructional tool that you can and will refer to over and over again. Good stuff, Mr. Simpson!!!

I have been a professional billiards instructor for over 25 years and Tom's book is one of my favorites. Expertly written - the one lesson per page format is brilliant - concise, clear, and spiral-bound so it is easy to use and lays flat to any page. Based mostly on physics and effective body use, don't let that scare you. Tom's writing is as entertaining as it is informative. Content includes tips for practicing as well as the mental side of the game, and is often laugh out loud funny. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. You can thank me later. Fascinating book about Fatima

I bought this book because I love reading about Marian apparitions, and I have always believed in what took place at Fatima in 1917. This book goes into full detail about the children and their lives. It describes their daily life, their family, and the events that led up to the apparitions. It really gives you a clear understanding of what all took place during the apparitions, and give you the true story of what the children experienced and suffered during this time. This book also continues to tell us what happened to the children and fanilies after the apparitions, which was very interesting. The descrition of the Oct. 13th apparition is extraordinary! It will WOW you! This is a terrific book about Fatima. If you want the full story of what happened, then get this book!

Well-researched and unbiased viewpoint on Waterloo

Jac Weller gives an evenhanded account of the great battle of Waterloo, particularly in his assessment of the non-British units under Wellington's command. Also specifically noted are the contributions of the Prussians under Blucher and their long arduous day just to get to the battlefield. The German and Dutch troops fighting alongside the British are given their due and there is much detail to substantiate their worthiness. The author never claims that either Wellington or Blucher were superior than Napoleon on the battlefield, but he clearly points out that both of them outshined the Emperor on June 18, 1815. Weller also states Napoleon's view of what happened on that date; he blamed others such as Ney and Soult, but never himself. The author is quick to note that Napoleon's own brother, Jerome, was mystified by his absence during crucial times of the battle. The debate will go on, but Weller makes the case that Napoleon's actions during the battle and his underestimation of the opposition were the leading factors in his demise.

A thorough, detailed and authoritive tome.

The history surrounding this famous battle in Belgium and the personalities involved are legend. Weller has produced a masterpiece that defines the smaller movements, fills incredible detail that other historians have glossed over, and provides a very human face to all parties including the `cold' British generals and their Prussian counterparts. Weller provides information on subtle changes in terrain and the purpose behind troop movements, or often lack of them, whilst narrating portions of the battlefield events. Weller also sheds important light upon the minor nations troops and commanders, showing how they were influenced by their years of duty under the French regime and how they too were able to withstand the French onslaught. This reprint is especially welcome as the book should have been classic reading for a generation of amateur historians and wargamers, except for the fact of its limited availability. Highly recommended from one Napoleonic researcher to all historians and gamers no matter what their `nationality' or preference.

Having read many books on Wellington and the Battle of Waterloo, I find this to be one of the best. A further indication of its quality and value to students of the campaign is the fact that Bernard Cornwell, author of the Sharpe novels, listed this as one of his primary sources.

About the Author

Gill Paul is a Scottish-born, London-based writer of historical fiction and non-fiction. Her novels include Women and Children First (2012), which was shortlisted for an RNA award, The Affair (2013), and No Place for a Lady (2015), which was shortlisted for a Love Stories Award. Her non-fiction includes A History of Medicine in 50 Objects (2016), World War I Love Stories (2014) and Royal Love Stories (2015). Gill has written about relationships for a number of newspapers and magazines, and has an occasionally successful sideline in matchmaking. She swims year-round in an outdoor pond.

Novel set in early 20th Century RUSSIA (and New York State)

The story of the fate of the Russian royal family in the early 20th Century is well known, they were butchered by the Bolsheviks after they were transported from pillar to post during World War I. Whilst war raged, Revolution at home was building. The conspiracy theory persisted that there were indeed survivors of the mass execution, people came forward who later in the 20th century claimed to be Tatiana or Anastasia or Olga… the Romanov children who had somehow survived the massacre. And it is with this tiny percentage of doubt about the fate of the children that Gill weaves a credible and gripping story.

Gill was alerted to a snippet on TV about a mooted relationship between Tatiana, one of the daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra, Tsar and Tsarina of Russia, and a cavalry officer and this serves as the foundation for a gripping time slip story.

The Romanovs were the glittering family who were at the height of power as World War I started. Their glamour and wealth were beyond comprehension, they were synonymous with sparkling jewels, opulence and of course Faberg� eggs. As the war took its toll, however, the disparity between their wealth and ruthless rule, and the poverty of the populace lay at the heart of the burgeoning revolution.

Cavalry officer Dimitri Yakovlevich Malama and Grand Duchess Tatiana forge a close friendship after she nurses him in a makeshift war hospital.novel set in russia The world as they know it is unravelling around them. War takes him to several fronts, yet they maintain a close and chaste connection and on the eve of yet another departure, they marry in secret. This gives him the strength to withstand the terrors and onslaughts he is about to face at the front. But as the casualties rise, the revolution grows until finally the Romanov family is herded and all the members, it is reported, are summarily executed. Dimitri naturally becomes distraught and clings to any sign of life, and finally lands in Berlin after the war. There he meets Rosa, but is not really emotionally available to her as he is still in thrall to his Tatiana… and he struggles to extinguish the hope of ever finding his true love alive. Rosa is a tolerant soul and tolerates his ambivalent commitment to her…

Forward to early 21st Century and his great granddaughter, grappling with her husband’s infidelity, takes off for a shack set on fictional Lake Akanabee in a remote part of New York state, which was left to her in her great grandfather Dimitri’s will. She knew nothing of his existence until she was alerted to her legacy. It is here that she spends a Summer of reflection and research that unravels a painful, yet interesting family history.

This novel bowls along at a very good pace, it is well researched, and the author’s passion for this period in history is palpable. You too will wonder at the fate of the Romanovs and whether indeed any members could have survived their experience and what their story might have been. This is an excellent novel to delve into this country’s troubled past.

The best historical fiction I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Even with the author using literary licence to further the story, it is a seamless read. I could barely stop myself from reading through the night when my eyes were scratchy and tired. Loved the story, the history and this writer.
