For acupuncturists
By Billy A.
This should be a must read for every acupuncture student near graduation. The front part it's a slow read, highly technical if you aren't a neurologist, but still worth getting through. It has a few good tidbits that will be used in my practice, but especially it gives context to what kinds of research is being done and why.

The Science of Acupuncture
By Anthony F. Jahn
This is a useful adjunct to the pocket text by Stux and Pomerantz, but does not stand alone as a text for acupuncture. I would recommend it as a secondary text for those who already have one of the standard clinical texts, such as Deadman or Macciocia.

Acid Test: LSD, Ecstasy, and the Power to Heal, by Tom Shroder

“A book that should start a long-overdue national conversation.” —Dave Barry

Despite their illegality, many Americans are already familiar with the effects of psychedelic drugs. Yet while LSD and MDMA (better known as Ecstasy) have proven extraordinarily effective in treating anxiety disorders such as PTSD, they remain off-limits to the millions who might benefit from them. Through the stories of three very different men, awardwinning journalist Tom Shroder covers the drugs’ roller-coaster history from their initial reception in the 1950s to the negative stereotypes that persist today. At a moment when popular opinion is rethinking the potential benefits of some illegal drugs, Acid Test is a fascinating and informative must-read.

Review
“Shroder filters the psychedelic world [and] presents a compelling case for supporting responsible, rigorous research of psychedelic compounds….Empty your mind of any preconceptions about psychedelic drugs and enjoy a fascinating trip through the politics, science, history, and promise of these controversial chemical compounds.”
—Booklist, STARRED REVIEW

“A well-respected journalist offers evidence, both empirical and anecdotal, about the therapeutic benefits of psychedelic drugs….this clear-eyed account [explores] both the complex history of the issue and the current thinking on the use of LSD, Ecstasy and other psychotropic substances for healing troubled minds….Occasionally, the stories are amusing…often, they’re moving…a perceptive criticism of the failings of America’s war on drugs, and Shroder delivers an important historical perspective on a highly controversial issue in modern medicine.”—Kirkus

“[Acid Test] explores the therapeutic possibilities of LSD and Ecstasy (MDMA), and, more broadly, the potential of the human mind….Guided by Shroder’s easy narrative tone, readers follow an activist, a marine, and a physician-turned-psychiatrist who developed a philosophy of psychedelic therapy through self-experimentation….Shroder both informs readers about the drugs’ shadowy pasts and provides insight into the future of mental health.”—Publishers Weekly

“This is not about the 60's. This book reveals the ongoing struggle to create valuable lasting therapies for PTSD in all its forms. Funny, hopeful, and sad by turns, these stories make me believe that someday soon, MDMA will be accepted as valuable, even desirable, to counteract the despair of so many returning veterans and other souls whose lives are turned upside down by PTSD. If ever interventions are needed, it is now. Acid Test presents an alternative to anguish and anxiety, showing a route of return to balance by use of compassionate therapies along with an outlaw drug. Millions of Americans suffer from the terrors of war or crime , and perhaps soon, we can say help is on the way.”
—Carolyn Garcia, also known as Mountain Girl, a former Merry prankster and wife of Jerry Garcia

“Over the last thirty years women have gone from the kitchen to the boardroom, people of color from the woodshed to the White House, gay men and women from the closet to the altar, and all of us have embraced a new vision of life itself on this fragile blue planet. Yet when we recall the factors that unleashed these dramatic transformations there is one ingredient in the recipe of social change that is always expunged from the record: the fact that millions of us lay prostrate before the gates of awe having ingested LSD or some other psychedelic. Tom Shroder’s Acid Test is an inspiring and profoundly hopeful book.”
—Wade Davis, author of The Serpent and the Rainbow

“Tom Shroder has written a book that is at once captivating and utterly surprising, with mind-blowing revelations of a lost history. The scourge of war and trauma and the mysteries of human consciousness fills virtually every one of the gripping chapters. With its impressive research, masterful storytelling and ultimately, the possibility of hope and healing, Acid Test is destined to be an important book.”
—Brigid Schulte, author of Overwhelmed

“Acid Test is a trip of a different kind. Tom Shroder makes the hunt for relief from modern wars' biggest killers—depression and post-traumatic stress disorder—come alive in bright, unforgettable colors, characters and emotions.”
—Dana Priest, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and author of Top Secret America

“Acid Test is a breath of fresh air after half a century of general hysteria, misinformation, confusion and questionable decisions of scientific, political, and legal authorities concerning psychedelic substances. Tom Shroder's fascinating, well-researched, and clearly writtenaccount of psychedelic history, from the discovery of LSD to the current worldwide renaissance ofinterest in these remarkable substances and revival of research in this area, is a tour de force. Most important—socially, economically, and politically—is the book’s focus on the psychedelic newcomer MDMA (Ecstasy). The pilot studies of this substance suggest that it might play an important role in helping to solve the formidable problem of PTSD that kills more American soldiers than the weapons of enemies.”
—Stanislav Grof, M.D., author of LSD Psychotherapy, The Ultimate Journey, and Psychology of the Future

“I read Acid Test with wonder and excitement. Wonder at seeing a controversial topic through Tom Shroder's fresh and lucid eyes. And excitement at the promise of healing that he reveals.”
—David Von Drehle, author of Rise to Greatness: Abraham Lincoln and America's Most Perilous Year

“Tom Shroder weaves together three compelling stories with such mastery that Acid Test reads like a first-rate novel. The book is that much more intriguing and consequential though because the stories are true and the subject matter—the healing of post-traumatic stress—of great currency and importance. We need to know how to treat the trauma that afflicts most of the world or we’re in deep trouble.”
—Richard Rockefeller, former chairman of U.S. Advisory Board of Doctors Without Borders

“If you think LSD is a relic of the Sixties, or good for nothing except getting high, you need to read this riveting and important book. It’s the fascinating story of how LSD and MDMA can, with controlled use, bring near-miraculous benefits to people suffering from mental trauma. Tom Shroder is a fine journalist and a terrific writer; in Acid Test, he’s written a book that should start a long-overdue national conversation, and someday may help to end a lot of unnecessary suffering.”
—Dave Barry

“A captivating narrative with irresistible characters. It will leave you wondering whether we have the moral right to oppose this breakthrough therapy.”
—Gene Weingarten, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Fiddler in the Subway

“Acid Test is a superb book. The people Tom Shroder introduces us to are across-the-board fascinating, the reporting he's done is deep and persuasive, and the writing is dazzling. Best of all, though, is what any open-minded reader will feel after finishing Acid Test: In a world of hurt, here is a new version of hope.”
—David Finkel, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Good Soldiers and Thank You for Your Service

“Acid Testrepresents such a critical contribution to our societal awareness, one that I am honored to wholeheartedly support. Faced with the challenge to alleviate the suffering of today's combat veterans, we must open ourselves to considering new modalities, revisiting therapeutic agents criminalized by fear and ideology, and harnessing the power of healing rituals and ancient wisdom. Tom Shroder offers a timely and compelling story of stories, illustrating the struggles and opportunities for hope and healing. Put politics and preconceptions aside; open your mind; read this book; follow the data; and speak truth to power so that scientific rigor and emerging knowledge can lead the way. We owe our fellow humans no less.”
—Loree Sutton, psychiatrist, retired US Army Brigadier General and founding director of the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury

Foreword

In 1975 I was a twenty-one-year-old college journalist, home on spring break in Sarasota, Florida, when I noticed a blurb in the local news- paper about a charismatic hippie with a pet wolf who was building himself a spectacular house in the woods near town. I decided to go out and see it for myself. I don’t remember anything about the blurb. I doubt it mentioned anything about the inf luence of psychedelic drugs in this project. But I am guessing that I inferred it, because while I didn’t much care about techniques of home building—nor would my college-student readers—I was extremely interested in the implications of the psychedelic experience.

I’m looking at a taped-together, Xeroxed copy of the story that resulted from that visit. Still no mention of drugs, but there it is between the lines. I wrote about the philosophy of the young builder, a guy named Rick Doblin, just a year older than me. It was about try- ing to live authentically, guided by an inner light rather than society’s preconceived ideas; consciously working to discover and create his own destiny rather than trudging along the rutted tracks set before him.

These were the kinds of notions floating around a certain subculture in those days; it was evident in the woodland home itself, with its giant, rainbow-themed, spiritually suggestive stained-glass window. Maybe we discussed psychedelics, maybe we didn't. But they were in the air.

I myself was not entirely unfamiliar. Under the influence of the psilocybin mushrooms my friends and I had learned to pluck from cow dung in the rural fields not far from campus, then boil into tea and drink, I had seen the world-and myself-from a novel vantage point.

It was like being able, for a few precious hours, to climb above your life

and view it from on high, a perspective every bit as revealing as seeing a too-familiar landscape from the top of a mountain. Instead of indi vidual cornstalks or oak trees or buildings, you saw checkerboard pat terns of fields, serpentine forests following the course of a river, villages arrayed around ascending spires of churches. You saw, for once, how it all fit together.

One experience stands out in my memory, because it is something that I have carried with me, every day since, for four decades. As the drug took effect, instead of feeling the usual lift, I grew increasingly entangled by anxiety. I began to obsess about an ethical problem I was struggling with, which generalized to feelings of inadequacy in life overall and my inability to find solutions.

The more I struggled against these feelings, the weightier and more intractable they seemed. And then s uddenly I had a vision: I saw myself with my arms wrapped around a boulder. I could feel its weight, almost unbearable to hold, and yet I was clinging to it. I knew that the heavy stone consisted of all my doubt s and anxieties, and as I desperately clutched it to my chest, I saw in a flash that part of me chose to be anxious-as a way to avoid making choices and evade responsibility for them. To be free of that awful weight, all I had to do was open my arms, which I did. The stone simply dropped away.

Ever since, although it has rarely been easy, I've been able to see negative emotions, on a profound level, as a choice, and the will to let them go as something I could develop, like a muscle. The more I practiced, the better I got, and I no longer needed the mushrooms to do it.

There wasn't a moment I decided to stop doing psychedelic drugs. When I left the college environment they became less available, and I gained more responsibilities-a job, a family, a professional reputation all of which made any illegal activity, and the potential health risks, unacceptable. But I never lost my interest in those psychedelic experi ences, or forgot their profundity, and the lasting good they did me.

Ten years after graduation, I had become an editor at the Miami Herald Sunday magazine, Tropic, when I noticed a story in the Tampa newspaper about a perennial college student who was promoting the party drug Ecstasy as a breakthrough in psychotherapy. I did a double take: it was Rick Doblin, the hippie with the house in the woods, the same guy I had written about a decade earlier. I assigned a Herald fea ture writer to do a cover story on him. We headlined it: ''A Timothy Leary for the '80s."

Twenty years passed. Now I was editor of The Washington Post Magazine, and once again an article that spoke to my lingering interest in the possible positive effects of psychedelics caught my eye. This time it was in the New York Times, about Harvard initiating a study testing the use of MDMA- Ecstasy- to treat anxiety and depression inter minal cancer patients. The man sponsoring the study: a very sophisticated-sounding Harvard Kennedy School PhD named Rick Doblin- the hippie in the woods.

I got a phone number and Rick answered. When I told him my name, he laughed. He not only remembered me and the two stories from twenty and thirty years earlier, he still had copies of them both. And just that morning, he told me, he'd held up the "Tim Leary" cover of Tropic at a board meeting of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), his nonprofit organization, to demon strate how completely he'd remade his image, from a rebellious hippie to the sponsor of cutting-edge scientific research in some of the nation's more conservative institutions.

This time I wrote the story myself, focusing on the MAPS sponsored research a psychiatrist named Michael Mithoefer was con ducting in Charleston, South Carolina, treating with MDMA-assisted psychotherapy mostly female victims of sexual abuse. The story ap peared in The Washington Post Magazine in November 2007, and much of it has been adapted here in chapter forty-two.

I was pleased enough with the piece as published, but I felt it barely scratched the surface, both because of rapidly accumulating develop ments in psychedelic research and because I sensed that the signifi cance of any given study could not be fully assessed without a deeper understanding of the people behind the studies, not to mention the century-long struggle of Western culture to come to grips with these powerful and, in some ways, profoundly threatening drugs.

This is what I have attempted in Acid Test. Whatever success I have had I owe entirely to the openness and honesty of the principal charac ters. Those people listed in the acknowledgments have granted me access to scores of records and privileged documents and agreed to sit for what amounted to a combined total of more than a hundred hours of interviews, unflinchingly answering the most intimate and sensitive questions, revealing things that were personally painful and might very well expose them to negative judgments or significantly compli cate their lives.

Their reasons for agreeing to all the above are transparent. They accepted my contention that the full and complete disclosure of all the information surrounding the use and abuse of psychedelic drugs, the history of psychedelic therapy, the motivations of the researchers, and the experiences of the subjects is the best argument for continued and extended support of rigorous and responsible investigation.

I owe a special debt to those among them who have undergone clinical trials to treat debilitating post-traumatic stress, a disorder that makes it particularly difficult and potentially painful to open up. In particular, I am indebted to Donna Kilgore, Tony Made, and, above all, Nicholas Blackston. They all spent hours reviewing their case his tories with me, leaving nothing off the record, as well as giving me permission to listen to or watch voluminous audio- and videotapes of their therapeutic sessions. It is hard to imagine a more naked vulnera bility than allowing an outsider to witness hours spent delving into your deepest, most charged and haunting intimacies explored under the powerful effect of MDMA. Yet, these people made that sacrifice willingly, for no other reason than a sense of duty. They felt the ther apy benefited them and quite possibly saved their lives, and they believed sharing their stories might help make the therapy available to others.

I am moved and awed by their courage.

By Thomas B. Roberts
What The Grapes of Wrath did for the 1930’s economic calamity, Acid Test may do for today’s PTSD plague. Just as Grapes caught a wave of public opinion and helped produce economic policies, Acid Test catches a wave of changing public opinion about psychedelic drugs and is likely to inform health policies.

Acid Test comes just as research on the psychedelic psychotherapeutics reenters the medical and scientific mainstream. For example, the July 4 issue of SCIENCE, the prestigious flagship publication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. presented two supportive articles. The first reviews current worldwide research such as that on going at the Johns Hopkins Medical School and at NYU’s Langone Medical School in conjunction with Bellevue Hospital. The second features Rick Doblin, one of Acid Test’s three principal characters.

Starting separately, Acid Test follows the lives of three men from their adventurous young adulthood to socially responsible maturity.

• Rick Doblin is the scion of a North Shore family near Chicago who lived a life of nude swimming, building a handball court and house, and an easy-going life at New College in Sarasota, Florida, until he experienced a life-changing psychedelic trip and dedicated his life to psychedelic psychotherapy by founding the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. As Shroder writes, “from a rebellious hippie to the sponsor of cutting-edge scientific research in some of the nation’s more conservative institutions.”

• Nicholas Blackston lived in a trailer near Paducah, Kentucky, much bullied as an outsider and because of his strange experiences. He joined the Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq, where he experienced the terror, fear, violence, guilt, and gore of war—multiple times. His PTSD resisted the full range of treatments from the VA until he met …

• Michael Mithoefer lived an easy life, Trinity College, a commune, medical school, leisurely sailing the Caribbean while home-schooling his daughters on board, an emergency room physician where he became fascinated by the psychology of health and healing. In Acid Test, we see him as a ground-breaking psychiatrist who lead the first government-authorized clinical research using MDMA “Ecstasy” to treat PTSD—at firstmostly for domestic violence and rape cases then treatment-resistant war-related PTSD in the second.

With a novelist’s skill to involve readers’ attention with his characters’ inner thoughts and emotions as well as their actions, the arc of Shroder’s three biographies meet in dramatic psychotherapy sessions lead by Dr. Mithoefer and his wife Annie, a BSN. Other patients that appear include women who were victims of rape and other abuse who also had been resistant to the standard forms oft treatment. Their voices as well as Nicholas’s and all the other characters enliven the book with rich, human dialog.

Tom Shroder is an award-winning journalist, editor, and author of Old Souls, a classic study of the intersection between mysticism and science. As editor of The Washington Post Magazine, he conceived and edited two Pulitzer Price-winning feature stories. His most recent editing project, Top Secret America: The Rise of the New American Security State by Dana Priest and William Arkin, was a New York Times best seller.

Enriching background along the way, Shroder weaves in the histories of many of psychedelic’s leading historical characters: Albert Hofmann and Werner Stoll in Switzerland, Aldous Huxley and Humphry Osmond in the US and Canada, Stan Grof in Czechoslovakia and Esalen Institute, Charles Grob (UCLA) and Roland Griffiths’ (Johns Hopkins). Readers learn the highlights of psychedelic history smoothly integrated into the book’s stories.

Who turn out to be the heavies in this story? The Veteran’s Administration, the Food and Drug Administration, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the National Institute of Mental Health, their cronies in Congress, and irresponsible journalists. All let exciting stories overpower scientific evidence. Until public attitudes towards MDMA changes, they are likely to remain adamant. Acid Test can make those changes.

Unlike impersonal scientific studies, Shroder’s book puts human faces on Nicholas and the female victims of abuse and their suffering, and it puts Rick’s, Michael’s and Annie’s humane faces on those treating it. Acid Test may be the spark that unites Americans by presenting a way to overcome our PTSD plague. We are no longer trapped in a hopeless situation.

What will it take for Acid Test to fulfill its role just as The Grapes of Wrath did? In the 1930’s, groups banded together to fight economic problems and in the 1970’s for HIV-AIDS research and treatment. Acid Test has the power to organize sufferers from civilian violence and their families and friends, activate veterans and their families and friends and organizations, awaken mental health associations, civic organizations, and general citizens to pressure Congress, the VA, and NIMH to fund clinical research into this promising, powerful, yet neglected treatment.

Couldn't put it down!
By Ramen Noodles
This is probably the best written book on the subject of using psychedelics for legitimate medical treatment of various mental health issues that there is. Most people would probably be surprised to learn that a tremendous amount of medical research was done on psychedelics prior to the harsh government crackdown on these incredibly useful medicines. The research was very promising. Through the use of this special and unique class of medicines, it's possible to completely cure (yes, I'm using the "C" word) various mental health issues including depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and others. Researchers were certain that psychedelics had a very bright future in the field of psychiatry.

What happened? The excesses of the 1960's counterculture happened, that's what. The War on Drugs was launched to crack down on the counter culture of the 60's and sadly, unfortunately for those who suffer from debilitating mental illnesses, psychedelics were made illegal in this crackdown, despite strong testimony from medical researchers and practitioners that this class of drugs DID NOT belong in the same category as other Schedule 1 drugs.

In the past few years research has slowly and quietly resumed on the use of psychedelics to treat mental illness. This book gives a brief history of psychedelics, the ensuing government crackdown, and the rise of new medical studies.

This is not a boring read at all. The chapters of the book alternate between the lives of several people including Rick Doblin, founder of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), and his tremendous efforts to make MDMA-assisted psychotherapy legal. Michael Mithoefer, a psychiatrist involved in ongoing MDMA studies, and Nicholas Blackston, a Marine who developed PTSD while serving as a machine gunner in Iraq. The book is a page-turner and it is written in such a way as to make you want to keep reading to see what happens next.

On a personal note, I discovered psychedelics a few years ago as a way to treat the many years of depression and anxiety that I have suffered. After a trip to the Amazon Jungle last year to use the shamanic brew ayahuasca, I can honestly say that I've experienced a dramatic improvement in my symptoms. I'm not 100% cured yet, but I suspect one more trip to the jungle will take care of that. I just think it's sad that I have to travel to another country in order to get the medical treatment I need. I sincerely hope that the day will come (hopefully very soon) when such treatments are commonly available.

Well written, more informative than I would have guessed.

I figured it would be a lot of material I already knew, but aside from the stuff about Hofmann it was all new material. I loved hearing Rick Doblin's backstory and gained even more respect for him. Overall it was very inspiring.

TheESV Reader’s Gospelsinvites the reader to approach each Gospel—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—as its own unified, cohesive story. The text is presented in a beautifully designed single-column format and is printed on cream, opaque book paper. All verse numbers, chapter numbers, footnotes, and cross-references have been removed, resulting in a text that reads like a novel. Occasional section headings alert the reader to thematic shifts in the narrative, and these headings are also located at the top of the page to assist in navigation.

TheReader's Gospelshelps readers immerse themselves in God’s Word so that they can see afresh the beauty and glory of Jesus Christ and the power of the gospel.

Review

"I cannot overemphasize how much I love this. The Gospels are printed here in beautiful typography with no chapter or verse divisions, enabling the reader to easily read through each gospel in a single sitting. In so doing, readers have something of the feel of the first recipients of these Gospels, most of whom were hearing the gospel they received as one narrative. I still need chapter and verse marks, of course, in the Bible I use to study with and teach from. But this volume helps me to just read and ponder."

THIS. IS. GREAT!
By GFGuildJr
WOW!!! THIS. IS. GREAT. I got this in a day early, and before I knew it I was already 20 pages in before needing an eye break. Distraction free for smooth reading because of no chapter & verse numbers. I hope Crossway does the rest of the Bible in this format and in separate volumes. I am enjoying the print size, font and spacing - along with the cream color and THICK pages. FEELS like a Novel in the hands. This is now my favorite Bible format. This is close to how the original audience would have read scripture if they could have afforded a personal copy.

Absolutely Stunning- Thank you Crossway!
By Trisha
This book is the 4 Gospels- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John printed on thick opaque paper and without any cross references, verse/chapter numbers or section headings. It reads like a NOVEL. I find myself getting lost in the storyline of the gospels and reading for large periods of time. The type size is large but not too large, maybe 10 point I would guess. This is similar to the ESV Reader's Bible but of course, it is only the gospels AND it's printed on thicker, opaque paper which makes a HUGE difference. There is absolutely no ghosting and it's easy on my eyes to read for large periods of time. This is how the bible was meant to be read!

In the back there is a listing of each page and what chapter it is... for example page 261 is John chapter 7. So if you wanted to know what chapter you were reading you could easily do that by looking in the back.

This is absolutely beautiful and my new favorite (partial) bible! I am going to write to Crossway, the publisher, and ask if they will release the whole bible in this stunning format- The Gospels, The Epistles, The Prophets, Covenant History, and Poetry in 5 separate volumes. It would be a huge hit!!!!!

This should be the standard of print design that every translation should be measured against.
By D. Nichols
I just received this Bible (4 Gospels) and I wish I could give it 10 stars. This is the most beautiful print addition of the Bible I own. Admittedly I'm not a fan of the ESV. However, I must say they do know how to print a beautiful enticing Bible. From the slip cover to the cloth hardback, from the typeset to the page layout and the subtle use of color...inside and out this Bible is amazing. Other publishers take note, this should be the standard of print design that every translation should be measured against.

oh and the cost... truly amazing!

The shocking truth about the murders of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman.

Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman were brutally murdered at Nicole's home on Bundy Drive in Brentwood, California, on the night of June 12, 1994. The weeks and months that followed were full of spectacle, including a much-watched car chase and the eventual arrest of O. J. Simpson for the murders. The televised trial that followed was unlike any that the nation had ever seen. Long convinced of O. J.'s guilt, the world was shocked when the jury of the "trial of the century" read the verdict of not guilty.

To this day, the LAPD, Los Angeles District Attorney's office, mainstream media, and much of the world at large remain firmly convinced that O. J. Simpson literally got away with murder. According to private investigator William Dear, it is precisely this assuredness that has led both the police and public to overlook a far more likely suspect. Dear now compiles more than 16 years of investigation by his team of forensic experts and presents evidence that O. J. was not the killer.

In O. J. is Innocent and I Can Prove It, Dear makes the controversial but compelling case that it was, in fact, the "overlooked suspect", O. J.'s eldest son, Jason, who committed the grisly murders. Sure to stir the pot and raise some eyebrows, this book is a must-listen.

Maybe O.J. Didn't Do It
By Q. Kelly
I've read many O.J. Simpson books, but this one is probably the most important. The book "O.J. Is Innocent and I Can Prove It" by William C. Dear is a must-read on several levels. The most obvious level, of course, is that it quite compellingly presents an argument for O.J.'s innocence in the killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. (However, it posits O.J. helped the true killer cover up the crime and took the blame, so to speak, for the true killer.) The book presents a suspect whom the police never interviewed BUT a suspect for whom O.J. got a defense attorney for the day after the murders for no apparent reason. O.J. also has a history of cleaning up after this suspect's violent acts. This suspect was never interviewed, police didn't bother to look into him, so why the defense attorney?

Who is this suspect? Jason Simpson, O.J.'s son (who was 24 at the time of the killings). Now, let me say something here. My purpose in this review is not to persuade you O.J. is innocent or that Jason is guilty. I'm not going to get into debates about that UNTIL you've read this book. Then we'll talk. ;-)

My mind remains open as to who killed Nicole and Ron, but Jason is someone the police should have interviewed for sure. He has blackouts, has assaulted multiple girlfriends, describes himself as a Jekyll and Hyde, was snubbed by Nicole on the day of the murders, had a handwritten time card on the night of the killings (the only handwritten time card among computerized punch-outs) and no alibi. In interviews (not police interviews, of course), Jason Simpson's story keeps changing. The book gives a long, detailed list as to why O.J. is innocent and why Jason should be considered a major suspect.

Why this book is a must-read on other levels: it shows the danger of police tunnel vision. The police decided O.J. was guilty without even investigating him and any other suspects.

It also shows how badly police botched the crime scene with its carelessness. However, there are a few blood samples, skin samples, a shoe print and fingerprints that remain unidentified. The police say the case remains open, then in the next breath, say it's closed. Which is it? It seems to be whichever is most convenient at the moment for the cops. When it's a request to get Jason Simpson's DNA and fingerprints for comparison, the cops say the case is closed, OJ was tried but found not guilty (whatever sense that makes). When it's media speech, the police say the case is open.

The police still refuse to interview Jason Simpson despite many experts, including Henry Lee, saying he is at the very least a plausible suspect.

I could write on and on and on about this book, but I urge you to just read it. Please. I've read books on both sides of the O.J. argument, and I've always felt something was a bit fishy, a bit off. This book could very well explain the answer.

Ugh, I can't believe I read this book.
By Lisa Ferris
I borrowed a friend's kindle just to see if it would work for me and this book was on it, so I am embarrassed to say I read it. And now to redeem myself I am going to try to save you from it.

I have not thought a lot about OJ, but always came down on the "both/and" side of things. OJ both committed murder and was framed. The substance of this book can be summarized in about five pages. The rest is just a nauseating repeat of the same facts over and over again.

1. Jason Simpson, OJ's oldest son, from a criminal profilers point of view has a more likely criminal and medical profile to be capable of murder than does OJ. This is based on past incidents of quite violent domestic abuse and a sordid history of mental illness.
2. Jason Simpson did NOT have an airtight alibi on the night of the murders. In fact, there is evidence that people covered for him (sometimes contradicting each other in the process.)
3. OJ hired a prestigious criminal attorney for his son the day after the murders, before he had even hired criminal lawyers for himself.

And theories:

4. OJ was at the crime scene after the murders, but did not commit them. Instead, he took steps to cover for his son.
5. The motive for Jason killing nicole was that she and her family said they would dine at the restaurant he was head-chefing, but she stood him up and went to Mezzaluna instead. This was a blow to his pride.
6. Dear found a knife in Jason's belongings that may or may not be the murder weapon.

There! Now you don't have to read the book! Because the rest of the book is just Dear's egotistical ramblings about his grandiose ideas of himself and his illegal activities to build evidence for his theory. Which is hilarious, because he blasts the LAPD for zeroing in on OJ to the detriment of their entire investigation. I think this is true, but Dear does the exact same thing. He talks in the beginning about drug connections between Nicole, the Mezzaluna staff, and other stabbings of Mezaluna waiters which I found quite compelling. But then he just dismisses that out of hand without even any explanation. He talked about "Don't assume, Verify." Yet the hoops he jumps through sometimes to pile on a case against Jason (especially in regards to the timeline) are quite acrobatic. He also has his facts wrong in some instances. For example, he says the LA prosecutors timeline has the murders happening at 10:40. That was actually the timeline of the defense. They chose a late timeline so that it would show that OJ didn't have time to get back for his limo ride by 10:50. The prosecution had the murders pegged at 10:15. Dear's theory actually requires MORE time needed for OJ after the murders, since he didn't commit them, just came to the scene after the fact. (Another blaring inaccuracy that made me laugh was when he talked about Jason having "mycological epilepsy. What? The epilepsy caused by mushrooms? I think he may have meant "myoclonic" seizures.)

I kept waiting for the book to talk about the blood and trace evidence. I am not an expert on these things, so I thought he might explain how blood and trace evidence could be similar between father and son to the extent that perhaps evidence consistent with OJ might also be consistent with his son. He couldn't do this, because the LAPD would not give him access to the evidence in the first place. But the reports are public enough that perhaps some inferences could have been made. He did get an opportunity to interview Dr. Henry Lee, forensic scientist for the defense. But all he did was ask leading questions that Lee could really only answer with "it's possible." He did not take an opportunity to ask Lee to interpret or explain the evidence's possibility of being attributed to both OJ and his son.

But what irritated me the most was his faux concern for Jason Simpson. He spends years stalking and harassing this guy, digging in his garbage, showing up at his work, illegally obtaining his medical records, publishing his personal notes, all because he wants to get Jason "help" so he doesn't get violent again. But it is obvious that his bigger motivation is fame and fortune or to be the one who solves the crime. Also, he talks about his investigation lasting 16 years and time is of the essence because Jason could kill again at any time! (even going so far as to spy on him when he goes to pick up a paycheck just in case he pulls a knife on his boss...it is all very dramatic.) But is there any evidence of Jason being violent since the murders 18 years ago? I'm not sure, but you'd think if there was, he would have covered it in his book.

The book was extremely boring to read, mostly because it is JUST SO REPETATIVE, and after the first couple of chapters, you keep waiting for him to say something new and different and it never happens. But my take away from the book is this: Yes, Jason should have been investigated at the time of the murders as a major suspect. The LAPD made a lot of mistakes and this is one of them. The theory that Jason is the killer is intriguing, but there is just no solid evidence. Everything he found was WAAAY more circumstantial and presumptive than what the LAPD originally had for OJ. But this is what through it all out for me in the end: Dear finds a receipt from a pharmacy in Jason's trash. It is for Depakote, a drug for seizure reduction (and Dear theorizes for Jason, treatment for mental illness and controlling rage) that was priced at about $250 per month. Jason owed the pharmacy somewhere over $500 for it. There is a note from the pharmacy on the bill that says that OJ refused to pay for the depakote and that Jason will need to pay for it himself. I am thinking, OJ is willing to ruin his whole life to take the wrap for Jason for the killing of the mother of his two younger children, yet he now refuses to pay for his Depakote? Depakote is the drug that Dear says he needs not so much for epilepsy but to control violent outbursts? To the extent that when he didn't have it he would go to the emergency room and ask for it? OJ would cover for him for Nicole's murder but would risk him murdering again because he did not have his medication? You would think if OJ was so concerned about his son murdering again that he would make sure that kid was SET UP with all the mental health care and medication he needs for life. But just a couple of years after the murders, when OJ is free and living on a substantial set of pensions, he refuses to pay for his depakote. It doesn't make sense.

The book was just macho-vomit by a guy who thinks too highly of himself. Any credibility his theory has is lost in the arrogance of the book itself. There is really nothing new here. And now I have done my due diligence in warning you and I can forget I ever wasted time reading this book.

Interesting theories... wish it would have focused on legal strategies a bit more
By Amazon Customer
Dear's book is a very interesting read. It is a bit long and repetitive, and the author talks about his credentials and how many people he's convinced of his theory a bit too much, but overall the circumstantial evidence is compelling. What Dear has uncovered and deduced at the very least warrants a follow up by the L.A. District Attorney's office. Let's talk about legal theory. Why would O.J. cover for his son if Jason actually did kill Nicole and Ron? Obviously, a father will often times cover for a child, especially when a murder is involved. And remember, California is a death penalty state. Jason, a young unknown black male, probably would have been facing the death penalty if he had been tried for the murders. Conversely, O.J. was a middle aged much-loved sports celebrity and a father to two young children. The odds were far less that the D.A.'s office would seek the death penalty if O.J. were the one on trial. O.J. may have been prepared to go to jail for the murders to spare Jason the death penalty. The most damning bit of evidence that Dear uncovered was that O.J. hired a criminal defense lawyer for Jason rather than himself the day after the murders. Why would O.J. hire an attorney for his kid if the kid hasn't done anything wrong? At that point in time O.J. obviously knew he was a prime suspect, yet he gets an attorney for Jason and not himself. That behaviour is very telling. Now think about this: whoever that attorney was that O.J. hired for Jason must have been told why he would be representing Jason. In other words, if we believe Dear's theory, the attorney knew Jason committed the murders and O.J. was innocent. However, that attorney is ethically bound to not say anything that would harm his client,(Jason) UNLESS not breaking the silence would result in the death of another person, )O.J.). Remember though, the prosecutors didn't seek the death penalty for O.J. If prosecutors had sought the death penalty for O.J. and O.J. was subsequently convicted, the attorney hired on Jason's behalf would then be released from his ethical obligation to not say anything that would harm Jason and thus be able reveal what he knew to save O.J.'s life. The ultimate strategy may have been that if O.J. was mistakenly convicted and sentanced to death, and then it was revealed by Jason's attorney that Jason committed the murders, O.J. would be off the hook and Jason would be spared the death penalty because the D.A.'s office would be so embarrassed that it almost mistakenly put football hero O.J. Simpson to death. The public is already leary about the state getting it wrong in death penalty cases, so if it was shown O.J. didn't commit the murders there would be significant pressure to not kill other potentially innocent convicts, including Jason. When O.J. was found not guilty, the best possible outcome for both O.J. and Jason, the defense attorney was forever bound to not reveal anything he/she may have been told about the actual murderer's identity.

CandyAppleBlack: Fire and Rain: Book One of Seven, by Regent T. St. Claire, Anthony C. Ferrante

In a grim, pre-apocalyptic metropolis, a mysterious, rogue angel named CAYCE has been sentenced by Heaven to roam the Earth for 1,000 years alone, but only allowed to spend the final moments with those who are about to take their own lives.

While Heaven hopes that seeing first-hand how terrible suicide is will force Cayce to embrace the celestial law which forbids it. His penance, however, only strengthens his beliefs to the contrary.

In their final hour, Cayce offers each of these hopeless souls a shiny, candy apple, black as a raven's wing at midnight. One bite, a last request granted, and the deal is done. As their time in this cold and brutal world quickly ticks away, the strange angel ministers a moment of compassion to the forsaken, but what does HE want?

...their souls - BEFORE they are damned and harvested by Hell.

Misunderstood and maligned, Cayce wants to keep these souls for himself, to protect and offer them sanctuary - a place to call home. To this end, he has been secretly building a legion of these damned throwaways in order to carry out his macabre plan which threatens to hasten Armageddon.

...But there are many forces at play that don't approve of or even fully understand what Cayce is doing.

WELLS, Cayce's mentor angel, is sent to Earth by Heaven to find out exactly what he's up to, while the son of the Devil, MARLOWE, has come here to reclaim what rightfully belongs to his father.

As Armageddon approaches and Cayce's plan materializes, the GOOD, the BAD, and the MISUNDERSTOOD all collide in this Gothic, Dark Fantasy as "The power of many will become The Power of One."

Poetic, literate, and artistic! Transcens the traditional limitations of its genre!
By Amazon Customer
Some rare artistic works effortlessly transcend the traditional limitations of both their genre and their medium. CandyAppleBlack is one of these. Be forewarned, this is not a comic book series for young children. Poetic, literate, and rife with a broken and maimed humanity, Candy's protag, an exiled angel named Cayce, gives new meaning to the term "anti-hero." In C.A.B., the books' creator, Regent St. Claire (of 80s/90s NWOBHM glamsters Castle Blak), has created a new sub-genre here which he calls "Seraph Noir," or, The Dark Angels. Are there subtle hints of Preacher, Sandman, and The Crow peppered throughout Candy? Most definitely. In the most loving, subtle, and reverential ways. Djezer's somewhat softer pencils are balanced by cover artist Marc Sasso's unique and evocative photosurrealistic covers, and Eric Theriault's VERY Noir-esque b&w inks. Candy is a potent combination that very painfully (and soooo arcanely) tells the tales of not only the rogue angel, but the many vulnerable humans who cross his path on their way to sliding from this mortal coil. In the words of the ethereal Cayce: "It lets them embrace the darkness inside them, and turns their blood candyappleblack, just... like... mine." I long for the day when Candy will finally reach the live-action silver screen, where the non-comics world can also come to know what happens when the power of many... becomes the power of one.

Gothically dark and delicious!
By HIGH ON THE HOG
I was twiddling my thumbs one night after a rather desperate evening spent on my backside watching seasons 1-2 of X files when a friend came over raving about a book he had downloaded to his kindle. Informing me that i would immediately recognise the author I took a glance on the web to see what he was fussing about. i couldn't believe it. When I was 16 I was a pretty avid rock fan and one of my favourite acts was a band called Castle Blak for whom Regent was the frontman! I wasted no time and jumped straight into his book 'Fire and Rain'.
Typically of Regent, his book manages to weave together a story so removed from real life that you almost feel like you are part of the unbelievable tale that unfolds before your eyes. Gothically dark, delicious yet full of angelic optimism and with a hero like no other there is only one way to read this book...all in one session!!

By Anonymous Bosch
So happy to see these awesome books finally available in electronic form. I bought the original print copies when they first came out, and when I finally figure out how to obtain them electronically, I will obtain the electronic versions for ease of portability.

The CandyAppleBlack storyline is wonderful, dark, compelling, gothic, "saints and sinners" material and makse you think "what if?" - what if angels *ARE* around us, blending in with we mere mortals, working through their own sorrows and trials and tribulations the same as we are, but maybe on a grander scale than us?

I have read and re-read the books many times over the years and they stand up to repeated readings. I highly reccomend all the books in the CandyAppleBlack series - go get 'em, you won't be dissapointed!

overview only
By Osorio Batres Silvia Rebeca
After all the hype and great reviews I bought vol 1 and 2 and I have to confess that I was very underwhelmed by them. David Vizard is unquestionably a master engine builder but these books (my first DV books) really didnt impress me very much. I need serious engine building info not simple overviews of a thousand things packed into the limited space of 100 plus pages. I have come to realize that all the engine tuning/building books I buy both locally and online are judged on whether or not they are as good as, better or rubbish compared to A. Graham Bell's Four stroke performance book. In this case my first David Vizard books qualify as "should not have bothered". In case anyone has read my other reviews and thinks that I have a bias toward Bell's book then let me say that I do and that since buying it only one other book out of dozens since has impressed me, It remains the champ as far as Im concerned

Great information
By Jack R Davis
This book may be a little dated, being written in the 1990's, but the information in it is timeless. Information that's always true for getting the most power out of an engine. I used this to improve my track times by 3 tenths of a second.
